Vessel Overview
This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most historically significant Santa Cruz 50s ever built. Sebago, formerly American Flag, is the legendary offshore racing yacht sailed by renowned author and solo circumnavigator Hal Roth in the BOC Challenge Round-the-World Races (1986-87 and 1990-91).
Built by Santa Cruz Yachts to a Bill Lee design, the SC50 is celebrated for its ultralight displacement, fast offshore performance, and seaworthy construction. Sebago has been professionally modified for long-distance solo ocean racing, including a taller rig, water ballast system, and reinforced deck gear.
This yacht is fully documented in Roth's best-selling books Chasing the Long Rainbow and Chasing the Wind, which detail his solo global voyages and experiences at sea. She is also featured in Handling Storms at Sea, an authoritative guide to offshore survival.
Performance & Modifications
Taller custom rig for improved sail efficiency
Water ballast system for increased offshore stability
Reinforced deck hardware and optimized sail handling systems
Alpha autopilot system (used successfully across two solo circumnavigations)
Yanmar diesel engine with direct drive
Only Santa Cruz 50 with an extendable bowsprit.
Main, Jib and 3 assym spinnakers.
Historical Significance
Sebago is one of the few production race boats to have completed two solo circumnavigations under the same skipper. As part of Roth's historic career, she has proven her capabilities in some of the world's most demanding conditions and offers unmatched pedigree among performance cruisers and racers alike.
