Nimbus C11: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Nimbus C11 is designed as an ideal commuter boat for those who regularly travel between mainland and island homes or use a boat for daily work commutes. It is engineered to handle varying weather conditions comfortably and efficiently, combining practical features with a versatile layout that also suits family cruising.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
The Nimbus C11 offers a spacious and thoughtfully designed exterior. The main seating area inside the climate-controlled cabin includes eight forward-facing seats with a seven-foot-high overhead, complemented by large side doors and skylights that provide ventilation and 360-degree visibility. At the stern, a 61-inch bench seat with an adjacent table creates a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces via a 27-inch sliding glass door. The aft deck is adaptable for fishing activities, equipped with eight rocket launcher-style rod holders. Side decks measure 16 inches wide with protective bulwarks and rails, leading to a sun pad atop the trunk cabin with safety rails and an expandable table, enhancing outdoor relaxation and socializing.
Interior Living Spaces
Accessed from the port side of the helm, the cabin interior features nearly six feet of headroom and includes two berths and one head. The galley is equipped with a two-burner electric stove, Corian countertops, a stainless steel sink, ample teak storage, and refrigeration. The forward V-berth measures 77 inches deep and widens from 36 to 66 inches, with hull-side windows and opening port lights providing natural light and ventilation. Privacy is afforded by a sliding curtain. The head compartment includes a separate walk-in shower and a hull-side window. The aft cabin offers increased privacy with standing headroom of nearly six feet, a 78 by 48-inch berth, a comfortable seat, full-length mirror, and additional storage, making it suitable for family members or guests.
Power and Performance
The Nimbus C11 is powered by twin Mercury Verado outboard engines, available in 300, 350, or 400 horsepower configurations. The test model featured the 350-horsepower engines paired with 16-pitch propellers. The boat measures 40 feet 7 inches in length overall, with an 11-foot 4-inch beam and a 3-foot draft. With an estimated test weight of 14,640 pounds, the C11 achieved a top speed of 50.7 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM. Its best cruise speed was 45.9 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM, consuming 43.6 gallons per hour and yielding a range of approximately 212 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The boat planes quickly, reaching planing speed in 4.4 seconds, 20 miles per hour in 7.6 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 13 seconds. Handling is responsive, with the boat leaning significantly into turns while maintaining excellent visibility through skylights and narrow mullions. Speed reduction during turns is moderate unless performing aggressive maneuvers.
Helm and Operational Features
The helm station is ergonomically designed with twin 12-inch Simrad Evo 3S multifunction displays capable of showing multiple screens, a Mercury VesselView display, and well-organized electrical switches. Controls include a joystick, digital throttle and shift, trim wheel on a tilt base, ZipWake automatic trim tabs, and remote controls for the bow thruster and windlass. The helm seats are highly adjustable with shock-absorbing mounts, high-rise backs, reclining features, and flip armrests, providing excellent comfort during operation. Visibility is enhanced by wraparound windshields with defrost vents and side windshield wipers positioned to clear spray effectively. The aft control station is fully equipped with a 7-inch display, joystick, steering wheel, thruster control, and engine start-stop functions, offering comprehensive control from the stern. Ground tackle features a Lumar windlass with an all-chain rode and a 16-kilogram Ultra anchor mounted on a through-stem roller.
Storage and Additional Features
Storage is abundant throughout the Nimbus C11. Dedicated compartments hold extra cushions and tableware, while large storage areas beneath the helm and alongside the engine compartment provide ample space for gear and supplies. Fender storage is conveniently located ahead of the engines. The boat also includes practical features such as stainless steel deck drains, fuel fills, and pump-outs integrated into the side decks.
Conclusion
The Nimbus C11 successfully combines the qualities of a reliable commuter boat with the versatility and comfort required for family cruising. Its spacious and climate-controlled interior, adaptable seating arrangements, well-appointed galley, and private accommodations provide a comfortable onboard experience. Powered by robust Mercury Verado engines, it delivers impressive performance and handling characteristics. Thoughtful helm ergonomics and comprehensive control systems enhance operational ease and safety. Overall, the Nimbus C11 stands out as a well-rounded vessel capable of meeting the demands of daily commuting while offering the amenities and features desirable for recreational boating.
