Axopar 38 Cross Top: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Axopar 38 Cross Top is designed to deliver exceptional stability and precise control at high speeds, embodying the philosophy of "Performance without intimidation." As the third generation of the 37 model, this boat represents a decade of hull evolution aimed at enhancing both performance and passenger comfort. The vessel was showcased at the Cannes Yacht Show, where a sea trial was conducted to evaluate its speed, handling, and overall functionality.

Power and Performance

During the sea trial, the Axopar 38 demonstrated impressive performance metrics. At low speeds around 2.3 knots, it burned approximately 5.5 gallons per hour, achieving about one mile per gallon. As the boat accelerated to planing speeds near 13.2 knots at 3,000 RPM, it maintained a level attitude with minimal bow rise, indicating smooth and stable handling. Fuel economy remained efficient at cruising speeds of 22 knots, consuming 10 to 11 gallons per hour, which translates to roughly one mile per gallon. The boat reached a top speed of approximately 54 to 57 miles per hour at 5,900 to 6,000 RPM, with six people aboard and 60% fuel capacity. Notably, the hull design minimizes ventilation and noise even when navigating wakes at challenging angles, contributing to a quiet and controlled ride. The captain emphasized the boat’s ability to handle the complex chop and crosswaves of the Bay of Cannes without difficulty, underscoring its robust seaworthiness.

Handling and Ride Quality

The Axopar 38’s handling was described as remarkably intuitive and stable, with the boat tracking precisely and requiring no use of trim tabs under the test conditions. The design incorporates numerous proprietary features that contribute to its smooth ride and agility, setting it apart from competitors who attempt to replicate its performance without fully understanding the underlying engineering. The experience was characterized as a thrilling yet comfortable ride, avoiding the harshness often associated with high-speed boating. This balance of excitement and comfort allows passengers to enjoy the boat’s capabilities without feeling overwhelmed.

Conclusion

The Axopar 38 Cross Top delivers a compelling combination of speed, stability, and comfort, reflecting a decade of continuous hull refinement. Its ability to perform confidently in challenging sea conditions while maintaining fuel efficiency and passenger comfort makes it a versatile choice for boating enthusiasts. The sea trial at Cannes confirmed that the boat lives up to its promise of "performance without intimidation," offering an engaging yet accessible experience on the water.
