1997 Navigator 5600 Sundance Pilothouse

5600 Sundance Pilothouse

Fiberglass/Reinforced
The Sundance 5600 Pilothouse was the largest boat in the growing Navigator fleet when she was introduced. An enlarged version of her smaller sistership, the Sundance 5300, the additional length of the Sundance 5600 is found in her larger salon dimensions. The Sundance floorplan differs from that of most pilothouse yachts in that the galley is on the pilothouse level rather than in the main salon. The full beam salon of the Sundance is surprisingly spacious in spite of a modest 15-foot beam. For privacy, the master stateroom is accessed directly from the salon (rather than from the forward companionway), and because there is no pilothouse bulkhead, the helmsman has a good view aft. A dinette is opposite the galley in the wheelhouse, and a nearby ladder leads up to the bi-level flybridge with its wraparound guest seating and dinghy storage. Additional features include port/ starboard pilothouse doors, large engine room (accessed from a cockpit hatch), maple cabinets and interior trim, and a roomy cockpit with lazarette storage and transom door, but no flybridge access. Volvo 430hp diesels cruise at 17-18 knots (about 20 top). Power Boat Guide

Engine
The Volvo TAMD74 is a six-cylinder, in-line marine diesel engine designed for fast planing and semi-planing craft, offering high torque, efficient performance, and electronic diesel control (EDC) for optimized fuel management and low emissions.
Engine Design and Configuration
The Volvo TAMD74 engine is an in-line six-cylinder, direct-injection diesel engine engineered for high-performance marine applications. Key design features include:
Cylinder block and heads: Made of cast iron alloy with two-cylinder heads and replaceable wet liners for durability.
Crankshaft: Nitrocarburized for strength with seven main bearings.
Pistons: Oil-cooled forged aluminum with three piston rings, the top ring being of keystone type.
Valve system: Equipped with replaceable valve seats and guides, contributing to longevity in heavy-duty marine use.
Lubrication: Freshwater-cooled oil cooler with side-mounted full-flow and by-pass filters.
Performance and Power
The engine delivers robust performance suitable for both propeller and waterjet setups. Standard ratings are typically 430 hp per engine, with options for slightly higher power configurations. The engine provides a rich torque curve, ensuring smooth acceleration, excellent response, and reliable cruising efficiency. It has a compact form factor optimized for onboard space utilization and service accessibility.
Electronic Diesel Control (EDC)
The EDC system manages precise fuel delivery, accounts for operating temperature, air pressure, and other variables, and provides:
Optimized fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
Stable engine response at low and idle RPM.
Automatic twin-engine synchronization to minimize vibration and noise.
Integration with electronic engine controls, including digital throttle and shift operation.

Walkthrough
The 1997 Navigator 56 Sundance offers a spacious, full-beam yacht layout with three staterooms, two heads, an open main salon, elevated pilothouse galley, and expansive outdoor and upper deck lounging areas.
Boarding and Cockpit
Board the yacht from the generous swim grid via the starboard side transom door, arriving at a large cockpit with floor hatch access to the lazarette and engine room. From here, custom double side stainless steel sliding doors lead you into the main salon, providing a seamless transition from outdoor to indoor spaces.
Salon and Main Living Areas
The full-beam salon features high-gloss maple wood cabinetry, large windows nearly 360 degrees around, and an open floorplan that allows abundant natural light. Furnishings include a three-person leather sofa, two reclining/swivel chairs with foot stools, and a coffee table. For entertainment, the salon is equipped with a 42-inch LCD TV, stereo with Sirius Satellite Radio, and a 25-bottle wine rack. Reverse cycle heating and air conditioning maintain comfort throughout the space.
Master Stateroom
Located aft for privacy, the portside master stateroom is accessed via a private entrance in the salon. It features a California King bed, mirrored vanity with rolling stool, multiple hanging lockers, under-bed storage, and an ensuite head with shower. This stateroom has its own reverse cycle heater/air conditioner.
Guest Accommodations
Forward, there is a VIP stateroom with a queen-size island berth, hanging lockers, under-bed storage, and a private head with shower. A third stateroom, to port, has an upper single and lower double berth, hanging locker, and in-closet stacking washer/dryer. The shared guest head is located starboard across the hall with shower facilities.
Galley and Dinette
The galley is elevated in the pilothouse area across from a seven-person dinette. It includes a double sink, induction cooktop, convection/microwave oven, and apartment-sized fridge with freezer overhead. This configuration increases living space and maintains an open flow in the main salon.
Helm, Pilothouse, and Upper Lounge
The pilothouse features starboard helm seating for two and full controls, including engine gauges, radar, autopilot, chart plotter, and bow thruster. Sliding doors provide access to the foredeck. Above, the bi-level upper lounge can comfortably seat 12 guests, equipped with a JennAir cooktop, sink, undercounter fridge, and dinghy storage with an 850 lb. davit crane. The command bridge, set up three steps above the upper lounge, has seating for seven, a captain’s bench, and full operational controls.
Exterior Decks and Equipment
Forward decks include stainless steel rail-mounted kayak racks and a custom bow bench. The vessel also features a stern hot/cold freshwater shower, cable master system, underwater lights, and shore water inlet. Both upper and lower helm stations are reverse cycle air-conditioned for comfort.
Mechanical and Systems
Dual Volvo TAMD72 diesel engines (450 hp each) provide low fuel consumption, averaging 4.5 gallons per hour while cruising. Fuel capacity is 600 gallons, fresh water 170 gallons, with an additional 600 gph water maker. Electrical systems include eight 250 AH deep-cycle batteries, Kohler diesel generator, and 400 watts of solar panels. Navigation equipment includes Furuno radar, Lowrance GPS, depth sounders, VHF, and autopilot.
Summary
The 1997 Navigator 56 Sundance stands out for its wide-body floorplan, full-beam main salon, elevated galley, private aft master stateroom, and multiple outdoor entertaining spaces, making it well-suited for liveaboard or extended cruising purposes, combining comfort, style, and performance.
