This is the cruising version of the original MacGregor models. The hull, deck, interior, mast section, rudder, chain plates and basic construction are the same as the racing version which has been well proven in thousands of miles of successful racing and cruising. The basic structure is designed for the enormous loads imposed by the racing version's large sail plan and is significantly overbuilt for the loads imposed by the smaller cruising rig. The high performance of this yacht is a result of its long waterline and narrow, easily-driven hull. It does not depend on large sail plans for high speed sailing. The long waterline also provides an extremely stable, comfortable motion at sea and at anchor, with far less pitching than on the typical cruising yacht. The systems in this boat have been designed to be functional and have been proven during Mexico and coastal cruises. This boat is easily handled by a crew of two. Recently returned from Mexico, she is ready to go again.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1986 MacGregor Cutter offers a unique blend of versatility and classic design, making it a popular choice for sailors interested in a traditional cutter rig with modern conveniences. Here are some pros and cons to consider:

Pros

Classic Cutter Rig: The cutter sail plan provides excellent sail options for various wind conditions, enhancing versatility and performance.

Spacious Interior: For a boat of its size, the MacGregor Cutter offers a surprisingly roomy cabin layout, suitable for weekend cruising.

Trailerable Design: Like many MacGregors, it is relatively easy to trailer and launch, making it accessible for sailors without a permanent mooring.

Shallow Draft: The retractable keel allows for shallow water navigation, increasing the range of cruising grounds.

Solid Construction: Built with durable fiberglass, the boat tends to have good longevity with proper maintenance.

Cons

Limited Headroom: The cabin headroom can feel cramped for taller individuals, which may affect comfort on longer trips.

Performance Limitations: While versatile, the boat’s sailing performance is moderate compared to more racing-oriented designs.

Aging Equipment: Being a 1986 model, some boats may require updates to rigging, sails, and onboard systems depending on their maintenance history.

Storage Constraints: Storage space below deck can be limited, which might be challenging for extended cruising or liveaboard use.

Weight: The boat can be heavier than similar-sized models, which may impact trailering ease and fuel efficiency if auxiliary power is used.
