"Pau Hana"
This gorgeous Kadey-Krogen cruising sailboat is an incredible find. She has been lovingly cared for by owners who have spared no expenses to maintain her, keeping her in excellent condition for her next adventure. She shines from bow to stern and turns heads wherever she sails with her classic lines. Beyond stunning aesthetics, she is also a well-loved and sought after cruising gunkholer. Just pull up the centerboards and anchor right off the beach- her 3'2" draft is a dream for the adventurous sailor who loves to explore new places that are inaccessible for the average monohull.
Pau Hana was constructed with the highest standards during the golden years of Taiwanese shipbuilders, and a sailor can take comfort in her Bluewater capabilities. While her cutter rig is simple enough for single handing, her spacious interior could easily accommodate a liveaboard family of four. Her interior is warm and inviting, with teak woodwork throughout the thoughtful layout. Coming down the companionway, the galley is to starboard and to port is an inviting athwartship aft berth. Moving forward past her spacious saloon, a full head with a luxurious separate shower is to port and a large V-berth is forward.
Pau Hana is truly an impressive sailing yacht and has stood the test of time, proudly representing the legacy of this unique model. As her designer, Jim Krogen, is quoted as saying: "This shallow draft cutter was designed for the personal use of the most ornery, knitpicking, demanding, hypercritical client I've ever had - me."

The Biggest Pros and Cons
The 1985 Kadey-Krogen 38 is a classic trawler-style cruising yacht known for its sturdy construction and comfortable accommodations. Here are some pros and cons to consider:
Pros
Solid Build Quality: The Kadey-Krogen 38 is renowned for its rugged, full-displacement hull and heavy-duty construction, providing excellent seaworthiness and durability.
Efficient Fuel Consumption: Designed for long-range cruising at modest speeds, it offers good fuel efficiency compared to faster planing boats.
Comfortable Interior: The layout is spacious for a 38-foot boat, with ample headroom, a well-equipped galley, and comfortable berths suited for extended living aboard.
Easy Handling: The boat’s design and single-engine setup make it relatively easy to handle for solo or small-crew operation.
Excellent Range: With large fuel tanks and efficient engine, it’s ideal for extended cruising without frequent refueling stops.
Cons
Slower Speeds: The full-displacement hull design means the boat cruises at slower speeds (typically around 7 knots), which may not appeal to those seeking faster passage times.
Older Systems: Being a 1985 model, some mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems may require updating or maintenance to ensure reliability.
Limited Maneuverability in Tight Spaces: The boat’s size and hull shape can make maneuvering in crowded marinas or tight docks more challenging.
Heavier Weight: The solid construction results in a heavier vessel, which can impact trailering options and may require specialized equipment for transport.
Traditional Styling: While classic and functional, the interior and exterior styling may feel dated compared to more modern yachts.
Made For
The 1985 Kadey-Krogen 38 is ideal for experienced cruisers and adventurous boaters seeking a sturdy, ocean-capable trawler with classic lines and exceptional seaworthiness. It’s perfect for those who prioritize comfort, reliability, and long-range cruising, whether for coastal exploration or extended offshore passages. This boat appeals to sailors who value a well-built vessel designed for safe, comfortable living aboard and confident navigation in a variety of sea conditions.
