REVIEWS (INDUSTRY AND OURS)

INDUSTRY REVIEWS:
Google these key words for some excellent professional reviews of the boat:

“Bluewater Sailing Jeanneau 349 October 2014” (really highlights sailing performance)
“Yachting Monthly Jeanneau 349 June 2014” (great overview of the entire yacht)
“Sail Magazine Jeanneau 349 August 2014” (great overview of the entire yacht)

PERFORMANCE REVIEW:

From Blue Water Sailing magazine:
“The 349 is a big 35 footer but it is still quite light and nimble. And, it is fast. We were out on Biscayne Bay with several other boats that were being tested by boating writers so we had to give chase whenever we got close enough to another boat to make it a race. Yes, the conditions were absolutely perfect for this moderately light, slippery sloop that was sailed by reasonably good sailors. But, that said, the 349 showed her transom to a modern 50 foot sloop, a 45 foot cruising cat and a 40 foot, displacement cruising boat.

Upwind, the 349 is quite close winded. We were able to sail at about 33 degrees to the apparent wind and the boat tacked in under 85 degrees true. The ability to adjust the sheeting angles was key to good sailing performance.”

OUR REVIEW:
As the dealer for Jeanneau Yachts for nearly a decade, we’ve encountered a lot of dynamic sailing situations with the 349. She’s a super-fast boat. Modern hull designs, prevalent over the last ten years or so, have dramatically improved sailing performance of yachts in this size range.

The use of lighter, stiffer, stronger construction materials has increased speed. Rigs are wider and stiffer, tying shrouds outboard to the hull instead of inboard to the decks. Less flex of the rig brings you better and tighter upwind performance. Carrying nearly the full beam of the boat all the way back to the stern greatly enhances downwind performance. When heeled, the hard chines on the hull sides create a planning surface that’s like adding a turbo to an engine. Once the boat hits about 5.5 knots, with 5-10 degrees of heel, it quickly accelerates easily up into the 7-9 knot range under an ideal wind/sea state. The twin helms not only help crew flow through the cockpit, they also give the helmsman a great view forward and superb view of the sails for ideal trimming. Twin rudders nearly eliminate weather helm so, under many reaching conditions, you can steer the boat with two fingers.

AVALON was ordered with Jeanneau’s Performance Pack setup so running rigging is very simply laid out, designed around racing yachts, and two people can race this boat. Friction rings with lines leading aft to the cockpit allow for adjusting the twist of the working jib, so crew to pull it in tight towards the centerline of the boat . A German (continuous) mainsheet line leads to both port and starboard primary winches for mainsail adjustment from either helm. The two additional cabin top winches provide even more control of the rig and sails from the cockpit.

Below, with most of her 11’-3” beam brought nearly all the way aft, interior spaces are voluminous. The centerline salon table makes sense here, allowing easy but safe passage fore and aft. The head is huge for a yacht this size with a large separate shower space and access to the port stern sail locker that is the size of a full cabin (hence the alternate available 3-cabin floor plan offered by Jeanneau). There’s lots of storage, good headroom, long salon benches, and excellent ventilation.

All these features together make AVALON an ideal bay and coastal cruiser that is sure to please a wide range of cruisers.
