Hatteras GT45X Open: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Hatteras GT45X Open is the smallest model in the GT lineup, yet it competes confidently with larger boats in its class. This performance evaluation focuses on the vessel's helm layout, engine compartment, exterior features, and on-water handling characteristics, highlighting its blend of craftsmanship, functionality, and power.

Helm and Bridge Design

The helm features a Palm Beach design that is both classic and functional, with a clean, well-organized layout that reflects Hatteras' commitment to quality. The windshield offers an unobstructed panoramic view, enhancing visibility. The helm station is finished in teak, emphasizing the craftsmanship. Controls such as engine start-stop switches, windlass, horn, and bilge pumps are conveniently located just above the wheel, flanked by twin Caterpillar engine monitors and throttle controls. Additional equipment includes dual VHF Icom radios, a Fusion stereo, Furuno multi-data display, Hatteras alarm panel, two 17-inch Garmin displays, Garmin autopilot controls, ZipWake trim tabs, bow thruster controls, and a centrally mounted compass. Defrost vents and a 32,000 BTU air conditioning system provide climate control. Both helm chairs are adjustable with flip-down armrests and footrests, and the captain's chair slides back 17 inches from the helm. The companion chair includes a grab handle and storage compartment.

Cockpit and Tower

The cockpit features a starboard side entry leading to an L-shaped settee on the port side, integrating the space with ample storage beneath the aft seating and additional compartments to port. The tower helm is accessible via two fixed ladders on either side and includes engine controls, autopilot, Garmin display, and a forward-mounted compass within easy reach.

Engine Compartment and Systems

The engine compartment is accessed beneath the mezzanine seating, supported by gas-assist struts for easy opening. Twin CAT C12.9 diesel engines, each producing 985 horsepower, are positioned on either side of a central passage. Both engines feature accessible oil dipsticks and local controls. Key systems such as raw water seacocks, sea strainers, a center bilge pump with float switch and high water alarm, and a fire suppression system are well organized. The main 24-volt DC battery switches are mounted on the forward bulkhead, with the 12-volt DC electrical box and master battery charging unit nearby. The main AC-DC breaker panel is located at the base of the companionway.

Exterior Features

The side decks incorporate structural supports that double as handholds. The bow railing begins midships and rises to 26 inches in height. Ground tackle includes a Maxwell windlass paired with a Danforth anchor, which is deployed through an anchor chute. The bow is equipped with 10-inch stainless steel cleats on either side and an additional center tie-off cleat. The vessel measures 44 feet 7 inches in length overall, with a beam of 16 feet 6 inches and a draft of 4 feet.

Power and Performance

Powered by twin CAT C12.9 engines turning Michigan-wheel props on straight shafts, the GT45X Open demonstrated strong performance during testing. With an estimated test weight of 49,700 pounds, including 800 gallons of fuel and four crew members, the boat reached a top speed of 36.1 knots at 2280 RPM in 10 to 15 mph winds and moderate chop. The most economical cruising speed was 26.2 knots at 1750 RPM, consuming 57 gallons per hour and yielding a range of approximately 330.6 nautical miles with a 10% fuel reserve. At a trolling speed of 6.7 knots (600 RPM), the boat achieved 1.7 nautical miles per gallon. The ride was nimble and smooth, with the ZipWake trim tabs effectively stabilizing pitch and roll. Maneuverability was excellent, allowing precise docking with minimal use of the bow thruster.

Conclusion

The Hatteras GT45X Open offers a compelling combination of power, handling, and refined design. Its fully enclosed helm with climate control, spacious cockpit, and flexible interior layouts make it suitable for both family outings and serious fishing excursions. Despite its relatively compact size, the GT45X performs like a larger vessel and presents a complete package for discerning boaters.
