Hatteras 90: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Hatteras 90 Panacera is an ocean-going yacht designed with advanced technology to enhance ease of operation. The vessel integrates the proprietary HATCON system, enabling comprehensive control of all onboard systems through an iPad mini or smartphone. This includes entertainment, climate control, navigation, fuel management, and more, with separate user profiles for guests and the captain to ensure appropriate access and safety.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
The yacht features a symmetrical side deck layout with 19-inch wide walkways and 33-inch bulwarks, rising to over four feet in height for safety. Opening side doors on both port and starboard sides provide convenient access, including a hatch for storing a stairway. The aft deck includes heavy-duty bollards with stainless steel rollers and optional warping winches, complemented by 360-degree camera coverage accessible via HATCON. The bow is equipped with a 4,500-pound Maxwell windlass, 300 feet of galvanized chain, a polished stainless steel plow anchor, and freshwater washdown. Fuel fills are located on the port side, featuring patented Hatteras vents with fuel level alarms integrated into the HATCON system for remote monitoring and control.
Interior Living and Crew Quarters
Crew accommodations are accessed through a transom door or a discrete aft deck door. The crew area includes a stateroom with an over-under berth to port and a head with dual access leading to the captain's cabin, which features a queen-size berth and ample storage. Adjacent to the crew quarters is a central seating area with a flat-screen TV and a modest galley equipped with a microwave, refrigerated drawers, a stainless steel sink, and generous storage. The interior layout emphasizes functionality and comfort for crew operations.
Engine Room and Mechanical Systems
The engine room boasts exceptional headroom, measuring six feet eight inches at the entrance and nearly eight feet at its lowest point. It houses twin Caterpillar C32 ACER engines, each producing 1,902 horsepower, alongside two 40-kilowatt generators. The space is efficiently organized with saltwater-filtered fans, a chilled water air conditioning system, and a sophisticated underwater exhaust system featuring high risers and mufflers that eliminate exhaust fumes and bubbling near the vessel. Additional mechanical features include a 1,800-gallon-per-day fresh water maker with an automatic priming controller, zero-speed stabilizers powered by an AC pump, and a 45-horsepower bow thruster. The bilge area contains comprehensive water supply and discharge systems for the yacht's five heads, including individual shutoff manifolds and multiple pumps.
Helm and Navigation Systems
The starboard-mounted helm station is exceptionally well-designed, featuring four interconnected 19-inch multifunction displays that can be customized and rearranged via the HATCON interface. This system consolidates control of all vessel functions, including lighting, air conditioning, pumps, and fuel management, with built-in safety features to prevent accidental operation. Physical controls supplement the touchscreens for critical functions such as searchlights, navigation lights, and bilge pumps. Engine controls include the CAT360 joystick, which integrates thruster and stabilizer hydraulics into a single system, providing precise and intuitive maneuvering. The helm seats offer ergonomic adjustability and incorporate touchscreen controls on the armrests. Security is enhanced with a fingerprint scanner for authorized ignition access.
Performance and Handling
With an overall length of 91 feet 9 inches, a beam of 22 feet 6 inches, and a draft of 6 feet 2 inches, the 90 Panacera is a heavyweight yacht, with a test displacement exceeding 254,000 pounds including fuel and crew. This substantial weight results from robust construction, solid marble countertops, and comprehensive standard equipment. The propulsion system, featuring twin 1,902 horsepower Cat C32 ACER engines driving 54 by 66 pitch 8-bladed propellers, achieves a top speed of 24.7 knots at 2,315 RPM, delivering approximately 0.1 nautical miles per gallon. Cruising at 80% load (2,100 RPM and 21.9 knots) yields a fuel burn of 169 gallons per hour and a range of 382.6 nautical miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The yacht planes in 10.6 seconds and reaches 20 miles per hour in 55.2 seconds, impressive figures for a vessel of this size. Handling is characterized by a level entry into turns with a gentle seven-degree roll, aided by stabilizers that coordinate with the rudders for smooth maneuvering. The turn diameter at full speed is approximately 600 yards, completing a 360-degree turn in just over two minutes. The CAT360 system provides excellent position-keeping capabilities, maintaining heading and position against 15-knot winds and tide with minimal drift.
Noise and Vibration
Noise and vibration levels are notably low for a yacht of this size and power. Measurements taken on the swim platform behind the propellers recorded sound levels between 90 and 91 decibels under full throttle conditions, with minimal vibration detected by hand and none by foot. This quiet operation is attributed to the deep hull tunnels and eight-bladed propellers designed to optimize performance while reducing noise and vibration. The advanced underwater exhaust system further contributes to a clean and fresh air environment on deck.
Conclusion
The Hatteras 90 Panacera exemplifies a well-engineered ocean-going yacht that combines robust construction, advanced technology, and thoughtful design. The integrated HATCON system simplifies vessel management, while the propulsion and hull design deliver strong performance and efficient handling despite the yacht's substantial weight. Attention to crew comfort, safety, and operational ease is evident throughout the vessel. Overall, the 90 Panacera represents a significant achievement in large yacht design, offering a refined and capable platform for extended cruising.
