Hatteras 45: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Hatteras GT45X Fly is an offshore sport fishing yacht designed to balance serious fishing capabilities with comfortable entertaining and guest accommodations. This vessel features thoughtful design elements and versatile options that cater to both avid anglers and those seeking a luxurious cruising experience.

Cockpit and Fishing Features

The cockpit serves as the primary working area for fishing activities, measuring 6 feet 8 inches by 13 feet 3 inches. It is outfitted with teak cap rails that vary in height from 20 to 28.5 inches, providing both durability and aesthetic appeal. A key feature is the aerated live well located in the transom, which includes a sight glass and a starboard side door for easy access. The live well opening sits 8 inches above the waterline and spans 30 inches across. On either side of the cockpit are insulated, macerated fish boxes measuring 4 feet 7 inches in length, equipped with heavy-duty stainless steel struts and turn-and-lock latches for secure closure. The center deck houses a finely finished leaning post with six rod holders, two drink holders, an open cutting area, and a storage drawer. This leaning post can be customized with options such as a fighting chair, table, or left blank, with the deck reinforced to support these variations. Additional rod holders are strategically placed along the cap rails, tower supports, and flybridge aft rail, totaling a substantial number for serious fishing needs. The starboard side of the cockpit features fresh and raw water washdowns, and conveniently located switching controls for live wells, fish boxes, and underwater lights. Forward of the cockpit, a mezzanine seating area with insulated storage and a freezer beneath provides comfort and utility, while a starboard-side insulated storage compartment houses a fire extinguisher, though its placement could be improved. Above this storage is a seat with an electric grill underneath, which can be replaced with a refrigerator and additional storage.

Flybridge and Helm Deck

Access to the flybridge is via stairs on the starboard side of the cockpit. The flybridge offers two seating areas: a side seat and a forward bench seat, providing excellent vantage points for navigation and observation. Mounted on the sides are 32-foot Pipewelders outriggers, enhancing the boat’s fishing capabilities. Three steps up from the cockpit deck is the helm deck, which boasts an open layout with six feet 10 inches of overhead clearance. Visibility is excellent through large side windows and a single-piece front windshield. The helm deck is fully climate controlled, with removable rear panels to help maintain the environment. Seating includes an L-shaped lounge along the aft and three helm seats, one of which can be removed to extend the seating area and accommodate a table. The helm seats can also be rotated to face the seating area, promoting social interaction. On the starboard side, three storage compartments offer tackle drawers, open storage, or can be outfitted with refrigeration and ice-making equipment, depending on owner preference.

Interior Living Spaces

Below deck, accessed via a companionway to the starboard of the helm station, the interior features six feet 9 inches of overhead clearance and a skylight that floods the space with natural light. The galley is positioned to starboard and includes ample storage, a microwave, a tile backsplash, and a Corian countertop. The layout accommodates customizable options for refrigeration and freezer drawers, a two-burner electric stove, and a Blanco stainless steel sink with a pullout sprayer. A spice rack and additional storage compartments maximize space efficiency. Adjacent to the galley is an L-shaped seating area wrapping around a solid wood table with a high-low mechanism, allowing conversion into an additional berth. Above the seating are three storage compartments and a soffit designed to evenly distribute air conditioning, avoiding cold spots. A 32-inch flat-screen television is mounted on the forward bulkhead, enhancing entertainment options.

Private Accommodations

The GT45X Fly offers two staterooms and one head. The master stateroom is located fully forward and features a generous overhead clearance of six feet 5 inches. The berth measures 6 feet 9 inches by 5 feet 2 inches, with ample space around the foot and head of the bed. Storage is abundant, including cedar-lined hanging lockers at the aft end of the berth, under-bed compartments, drawers, and hull-side storage, which some owners utilize for rod storage. The en suite head includes a separate walk-in shower and a second entrance, allowing it to function as a day head as well. The second stateroom, located to port, offers over-under berths with standard storage and an overhead skylight. This cabin is optional; if omitted, the seating area can be extended forward for additional living space.

Conclusion

The Hatteras GT45X Fly exemplifies the brand’s commitment to quality, comfort, and versatility. Its design accommodates a range of layouts and material choices, catering to diverse owner preferences. The vessel’s offshore performance aligns with Hatteras’s reputation for safety and reliability, while its fishing and entertaining features make it a well-rounded sport fishing yacht. Overall, the GT45X Fly presents a compelling option for those seeking a capable and comfortable offshore fishing platform.
