Hans Christian Independence 45, SALTY LADY, Hull #17: an extremely rare and coveted twin-engine example, one of only four built.
The Hans Christian 45 Independence Trawler stands as a distinctive blend of rugged passagemaking capability and classic nautical elegance. Designed for long-range cruising, this vessel reflects a philosophy of self-sufficiency, comfort, and seaworthiness that appeals to serious mariners and liveaboard enthusiasts alike. With its sturdy construction, generous fuel capacity, and thoughtfully designed interior, the Independence 45 is built to handle extended voyages while providing the warmth and charm of a traditional trawler. The folding mast is perfect for the Great Loop, reducing the air draft to approximately 16'.
Whether navigating coastal waters or crossing open seas, SALTY LADY offers a reliable and refined platform for those who value both adventure and enduring craftsmanship. A handsome yacht with an instantly recognizable profile, she is a strongly built, raised pilothouse trawler with a high prow, intended for those who take their cruising seriously. SALTY LADY is built on a semi-displacement hull with moderate beam, hard aft chines to reduce roll (rather than rounded bilges common to most displacement designs), and a long, prop-protecting keel.
Designd by James Backus and Gary Grant, and built in Taiwan, a total of 18 Independence 45s were made. Production was relocated to the U.S. in 1996 where the well-regarded Cherubini Boat Company built hull #19 that same year. The deck plan, which has remained essentially unchanged over the years, differs from many pilothouse designs as both staterooms are reached via a companionway from the salon. Visibility from the raised pilothouse is excellent. Lacking side decks, the full-width salon is particularly spacious with plenty of seating space and room for a large U-shaped galley.
