Welcome aboard OUTRAGEOUS, a beautifully maintained Gulfstar Custom 40, hull #4 of only 19 Gulfstar 40's built by the Custom Division of Gulfstar during 1977 and 1978. Outrageous was designed by ocean racing champion Ted Hood to the philosophy that the average skipper would prefer a comfortable and able cruising boat which will still perform well as a racer, making the sport less expensive and more fun for more people. The clean and efficient deck and cockpit layout is based on Hood's years of ocean racing experience. A very narrow cabin trunk forward provides an extremely large working area on the foredeck, with no loss of necessary headroom below. All of the running rigging is designed for easy, positive sail handling under the most demanding wind force and sea conditions. Outrageous is a heavy center boarder and draws 3'11" with the board up and 11'3" with the board down. The narrow hull and low wetted surface makes her unbelievably quick for a heavy boat. She points and heads upwind beautifully with the high aspect 7' blade down. She holds her own against boats of the same waterline weighing half as much. The centerboard design will offer her skipper many cruising grounds denied the deep draft-racing machine.

The current owner bought her new and launched her in 1977. Outrageous has benefited from the fact that her owner is a carpenter and has beautifully (and properly) maintained the integrity of all the wood surfaces. No coat over coat without proper prep here. In addition, this magnificent vessel has received constant attention and upgrades: new teak cabin sole, new stainless steel ports, new stove, new countertops, sinks and faucets in both galley and head, new main sail, new stainless steel winches, new macerator and new hoses.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1976 Gulfstar Custom 40 is a classic cruising sailboat known for its sturdy construction and comfortable accommodations. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Solid Build Quality: The Gulfstar Custom 40 features a robust fiberglass hull and deck, providing durability and a strong offshore capability.

Spacious Interior: Designed with cruising comfort in mind, it offers generous cabin space, including multiple berths, a well-equipped galley, and ample storage.

Stable Sailing Performance: With a moderate displacement and full keel design, the boat delivers stable and predictable handling, making it suitable for long passages.

Classic Aesthetic: The traditional lines and teak trim give the boat a timeless, elegant appearance that appeals to many sailors.

Good Tankage: Large fuel and water tanks support extended cruising without frequent refueling or resupply.

Cons

Heavier Displacement: The solid construction results in a heavier boat, which can translate to slower speeds compared to lighter, more modern designs.

Older Systems: Being a 1976 model, many onboard systems such as electrical, plumbing, and engine components may require upgrades or ongoing maintenance.

Limited Upwind Performance: The full keel and hull shape, while stable, may not point as high or perform as efficiently to windward as more contemporary fin keel designs.

Interior Layout: While spacious, the layout may feel dated and less optimized compared to newer cruising yachts.

Availability of Parts: Some specific components or fittings unique to the Gulfstar Custom 40 may be harder to find, necessitating custom replacements.
