Four Winns H190: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Four Winds Horizon 190 is an 18.7-foot runabout designed for boaters seeking a step up from entry-level models without sacrificing affordability or fun. This model combines attractive styling, practical features, and solid performance, making it an appealing choice for families looking to stay within a reasonable boating budget.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The bow area features wraparound seating covered in Four Winds' exclusive Aquaflex marine-grade vinyl, notable for its durability and softness. Beneath the seats, there are lined storage compartments, including a dedicated anchor storage under the forward bow seat. Stainless steel handholds integrated into the gunwales enhance both safety and aesthetics, complemented by numerous cup holders. The fiberglass deck is covered with snap-in carpet for added comfort and ease of maintenance. Near the walk-through windshield, a spacious compartment with a hydraulic strut lid provides convenient storage for skis, a feature uncommon in this class. At the stern, a full-width ski platform with a fold-down ladder and a robust ski ring facilitate water sports activities. The ladder features broad, powder-coated aluminum steps painted to match the boat.

Cockpit and Helm

The helm is equipped with stylish black and white gauges set in chrome bezels on a plastic dash with a sporty turned metal appearance. Instrumentation is fully backlit for night visibility, and auxiliary electrical systems are managed via rocker switches. A tilting steering wheel comes standard. Seating options include a well-padded, swiveling captain's bucket seat or a fold-out lounge. The passenger seat folds out to form a sun lounge, and beneath it lies a large lockable compartment housing a Sirius satellite-ready AM/FM CD radio. At the stern, two innovative jump seats flank the fiberglass engine cover. These seats can be reconfigured into three different arrangements: a sun deck, lowered seating, or flipped over to create a non-skid step for boarding. When arranged as a sun pad, there is space underneath for a small ice cooler.

Engine Access and Maintenance

The engine cover design facilitates easy maintenance. The top of the engine cover can be opened without removing the entire engine box, providing access to a large hatch for routine checks of oil, belts, and fittings. For full engine access, the entire cover can be removed quickly by unscrewing two thumb screws at the deck.

Power and Performance

The Four Winds Horizon 190 measures 18.6 feet overall with a beam of 7.7 feet, carries 34 gallons of fuel, and weighs approximately 2,800 pounds. The test model was powered by a 220 horsepower MerCruiser 4.3-liter V6 stern drive. Performance testing recorded a top speed of 47.4 miles per hour at 5,000 RPM. At a cruising speed of 27.3 miles per hour (3,000 RPM), the engine delivers fuel efficiency of 4.5 miles per gallon, resulting in a cruising range exceeding 140 miles.

Conclusion

Offering a combination of style, innovation, and practical features, the Four Winds Horizon 190 represents excellent value in its segment. Priced around $20,000, it provides a well-equipped, versatile boat that appeals to families and boaters seeking to upgrade from entry-level models without compromising on quality or performance.
