Design Operating Efficiency

Unique Operating Efficiency

The Fountaine Pajot’s outstandingly low fuel consumption is a primary attraction for many buyers who recognize the savings represented by the vessels’ long range. The boat offers a minimum of 40 percent reduction in fuel consumption when compared to the performance of a similarly-sized mono-hull.

The reduced drag created by the two hulls plus the efficient wave-piercing action contributes to greatly reduced rates of consumption, and extended range – up to one thousand miles with standard fuel tanks.

The FP Power Cats are renowned for their superior performance in challenging conditions, while maintaining excellent stability and comfort while underway. Higher speeds are achievable in tough conditions due to the boat’s semi-displacement hull design. More of the hull remains in the water at higher speeds, softening the ride and reducing stress on the hull from wave impact.

FP Power Cats offer generous freeboard with reinforced hulls and bows to handle the toughest offshore conditions. The hull design offers an impressively dry deck at sea and a stable ride with minimal bounce and roll in dangerous and uncomfortable conditions.

Unlike many of its competitors, these vessels are pleasantly quiet, with engines housed with their own dedicated access.

Overview

The Fontaine Peugeot MY40 is a luxury catamaran designed with an emphasis on spaciousness and volume, characteristics inherent to catamaran hulls. This model features three staterooms, two heads, and ample storage capacity capable of accommodating months of provisions. The yacht is purpose-built for IPS pod propulsion, distinguishing it from traditional sailing catamarans adapted for power, and offers a well-thought-out layout that maximizes both living and entertainment spaces.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The exterior of the MY40 showcases the generous open spaces typical of catamarans, beginning with the aft deck which benefits from 34-inch high bulwarks enhancing safety. Life raft storage is conveniently located between the two engine hatches. A long L-shaped bench seat to starboard offers storage beneath and is protected by the extended flying bridge deck overhead, complemented by a drop-down sunshade. The swim platform spans the full beam at 41 inches deep, is hydraulically actuated with a non-skid surface, and features wide side stairs with a reboarding ladder and grab rails for safety. Access to the flying bridge is via 27-inch wide curving stairs leading to a spacious entertainment area. This area includes an L-shaped seating arrangement around a solid wood table with dual pedestals, LED lighting, and a hardtop providing seven feet of overhead clearance with additional LED lights and a manually opening sunroof. Opposite the seating is a refreshment center equipped with a sink, refrigerator, and storage. Forward of this is a double-wide shaded lounge with cushions that convert into seat backs. The bow is accessed by 26-inch wide side decks with 25-inch high rails, leading to two adjustable six-foot eight-inch lounge seats flanking a large storage compartment accessed via a hatch.

Interior Living Spaces

The interior of the MY40 blurs the line between inside and outside through an open layout, high headroom, and abundant natural light from large side windows. Entry into the galley is through a four-foot one-inch wide doorway that can be expanded to nearly seven feet. The galley offers generous counter space and storage both above and below, featuring a two-burner cooktop with a convection oven, a sink positioned aft in an L-shaped configuration, and a full-size refrigerator-freezer opposite. Additional deck storage is accessible via a hatch. Adjacent to the galley is the dining area, elevated by a nine-inch step and transitioning from wood flooring to carpet. This area includes a large bench seat to port with two 29-inch wide tables on fixed pedestals that rotate and extend to nearly six feet in length. Storage is integrated beneath the seating and in leather-upholstered shelving behind the sofa. A sliding window section adds ventilation.

Private Accommodations

The MY40’s interior layout takes full advantage of the catamaran’s dual hulls to provide natural privacy. The master suite occupies the entire port hull and is accessed via floating tread stairs adjacent to the main entry. It features a centrally mounted athwartships berth with access to both sides, large hull-side windows providing panoramic views, shelving, bedside tables, and seating. Headroom throughout the yacht is consistently six feet eight inches. Additional storage is located beneath hull-side windows and in cabinetry, with options for a washer-dryer combo, wine chiller, or refrigerator opposite the berth. The en suite bathroom includes a vanity, an open-concept walk-in shower, and an enclosed water closet with extensive storage. On the starboard side, two guest staterooms are separated by a shared head that also serves as a day head. The VIP stateroom aft features a large berth with ample headroom, overhead fans, and natural light from a large hull-side window with an opening port, complemented by seating and a hanging locker. The forward guest stateroom can be configured with a queen berth or bunk beds, has two overhead hatches for light and ventilation, a bench beneath the window, and a hanging locker. Additional storage is located outside the cabin door.

Design and Functionality

The MY40 is not a modified sailing catamaran but a dedicated power catamaran designed from the ground up for IPS pod propulsion. This approach has allowed the designers to optimize living and entertainment spaces without compromise. The yacht’s volume and layout provide the feel of a much larger vessel, with the master suite alone exemplifying this spaciousness. The design accommodates a variety of uses, including entertaining up to 20 guests, sleeping eight comfortably, and cruising with two to four people in stable comfort. The yacht is also noted for being enjoyable to operate, though detailed performance and handling are covered separately.

Conclusion

The Fontaine Peugeot MY40 is a thoughtfully designed luxury catamaran that leverages its hull form to deliver exceptional volume and comfort. Its dedicated powercat design integrates spacious accommodations, generous storage, and well-appointed living and entertainment areas. The yacht’s features make it suitable for both extended cruising and social gatherings, offering a blend of practicality and style. Further insights into its performance and handling are available in additional reviews.
