Fountain 38: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Fountain 38LS is a high-performance center console boat renowned for its blend of comfort, luxury, fishing capability, safety, and handling. Designed to accommodate serious anglers and recreational boaters alike, it offers a range of options in power and layout to suit various needs.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Layout

At the stern, the test model is equipped with triple 400-horsepower Mercury Verado outboards, with the center and starboard engines connected by a tie bar for synchronized operation. The boat can be outfitted with up to triple 450Rs or even quad 400 racing engines, although the hull-side dive door option is only available with triple engine setups. An inward-opening gate secured by a magnetic catch provides access to the cockpit, which features a luxury seating package replacing the standard live well. This seating spans 66 inches, includes flip-down armrests on both sides, and offers self-draining storage beneath, though it is not insulated. The decking throughout is non-skid and self-draining, with drains branded by the Fountain logo. Opposing seating 35 inches ahead includes similar flip armrests and quality upholstery, with a live well beneath. Between these seats is an easily accessible hatch housing bilge pumps, live well pickups, water tank, and fuel manifold. Beverage and rod holders are conveniently placed on both sides, complemented by padded bolsters with removable padding for easy cleaning. Freshwater and raw water washdowns are located on opposite sides of the cockpit. Tackle storage compartments designed for Plano 3700 tackle boxes and drawer storage flank the console, with in-deck fish lockers on both sides. The side decks maintain a minimum width of 19 inches between bolsters and hardtop supports, leading forward to a large in-deck storage compartment situated ahead of the 33-inch-wide shades lounge seat. This lounge includes lengthy grab handles and under-seat storage.

Forward Seating and Foredeck Features

The bow area features well-padded V-shaped seating with bolsters extending around the perimeter and powder-coated rails for safety. The seat backs are versatile, capable of lifting and rotating to the sides or being removed entirely, with rod holders positioned underneath. Additional storage is available beneath these seats, and a table can be installed to enhance the area’s functionality. Notably, the forward-most section lacks cushions intentionally, serving as a step to access the ground tackle. The anchor system includes a windlass with a chain stopper leading to a through-the-stem anchor and a forward cleat. The foredeck is spacious enough to serve as a casting platform.

Head Compartment and Systems Access

Accessed from the starboard side, the head compartment is equipped with an electric flush toilet and a sink. The aft bulkhead features a zipper opening to battery storage, with battery switches, circuit breakers, and ignition controls positioned above. An opening port light provides ventilation, enhancing comfort and usability.

Helm and Electronics

The helm is enclosed by a wraparound windscreen, which exhibits minor distortion at the corners but maintains good visibility overall. A compass is aligned directly with the helm for navigational ease. The dash features two 15-inch multifunction displays flanking a Fusion stereo system, dual rows of push-button electrical switches, a trim tab display, engine start/stop controls, and a large vessel view display. Trim tab controls are conveniently located ahead of the throttles, alongside VHF radio and the Optimus control panel. The steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base and includes a steering knob, Optimus joystick, and two beverage holders, all complemented by a powder-coated grab rail and a padded bolster beneath. Behind the helm are dual bucket seats with flip-up armrests, contoured backs, dual flip bolsters, flip footrests, and integrated large speakers, all upholstered in high-quality materials.

Hardtop and Overhead Features

The hardtop is a standout element, featuring an intricate, contoured design with integrated speakers, LED lighting, spreader lights fore and aft, and a large forward light bar. It includes a remote control for raising and lowering the all-around navigation light and a storage box overhead. The hardtop supports incorporate integrated grab handles, enhancing safety and convenience. Additionally, an extendable awning can be deployed to provide shade when needed.

Performance and Handling

The Fountain 38LS measures 38 feet 4 inches in length overall, with a beam of 10 feet 6 inches and a draft of 31 inches. The empty weight is 15,600 pounds, with a test weight estimated at 16,919 pounds including 28% fuel and three people aboard. Powered by triple 400-horsepower Mercury Verado engines turning 22.5-inch pitch propellers, the boat achieved a top speed of 75.7 miles per hour at 6,000 RPM. The most efficient cruise speed was 41.8 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, where fuel consumption was 31.3 gallons per hour, yielding approximately 1.3 miles per gallon and a range of 503 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve from the 418-gallon total capacity. The boat planes quickly, reaching planing speed in 3.3 seconds and maintaining plane down to 12.3 miles per hour. Acceleration times include 20 mph in 5.6 seconds, 30 mph in 8.1 seconds, and 40 mph in 11.1 seconds. The stepped hull design contributes to a slippery, performance-oriented feel, encouraging spirited driving. However, handling at high speeds requires skill to manage chine walk tendencies. The boat is best enjoyed at mid-50s mph for comfort, though it is capable of low 70s mph speeds. One noted ergonomic consideration is the absence of grab handles near the passenger seating area, which could improve comfort during high-speed runs.

Conclusion

The Fountain 38LS successfully embodies the brand’s reputation for comfort, luxury, fishing capability, safety, and handling. Its thoughtful design, quality construction, and impressive performance metrics make it a compelling choice for serious boaters seeking a versatile and high-performing center console. While it demands some skill to fully exploit its handling characteristics at speed, it offers a rewarding driving experience and ample amenities for both fishing and leisure.

Limited Storage: While the interior is cozy, it may lack extensive storage options compared to larger boats, potentially limiting capabilities for longer trips.
