Formula Sun Sport: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Formula 350 SunSport is a comfortable weekend cruiser that exemplifies the brand's renowned fit, finish, and handling characteristics. This model offers a blend of elegant design and practical features, making it suitable for both leisure cruising and performance boating.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

Boarding the 350 SunSport is facilitated by swim platforms featuring synthetic plastic teak surfacing, with the aft platform measuring 33 inches and an extension behind at 32 inches. Beverage holders and a stainless steel rail enhance convenience and safety during swimming and docking. The aft platform also includes an under-mount swim step and boarding seat, complemented by a stereo remote and courtesy lighting. Forward of the platform, an aft-facing chaise lounge measuring 4 feet by 6 feet 2 inches provides ample relaxation space with storage beneath and additional beverage holders. Access to the cockpit is via an 8-inch step leading to a 17-inch wide walkthrough, with a hot and cold shower mounted on the port bulkhead. The cockpit seating is arranged in a J-shaped configuration with flip seat backs on the starboard side, featuring marine-grade vinyl upholstery with multiple tones, double stitching, contrast bead welding, and custom embroidery. Integrated beverage holders, USB connectivity, and stainless steel grab rails enhance functionality. On the port side, a wet bar includes stainless beverage holders, a covered trash receptacle, a sink with a flip faucet, a refrigerated drawer, and storage. A two-person angled lounge offers versatile seating orientations and additional USB ports. Overhead, a hardtop equipped with LED lighting, four speakers, and a manually operated sunroof provides shelter and entertainment.

Interior Living Spaces

Access to the cabin is through a center sliding door adjacent to the helm. The interior features washed oak and gray wash wood grain flooring, one of three available finish options. The galley, located to port, includes upper and lower cabinet storage, a Corian countertop, a single basin stainless steel sink, a concealed electric stove, a microwave, and a refrigerator opposite the galley area. Forward of the galley is an ultra-leather upholstered convertible dinette. The head compartment is situated to starboard. The aft cabin offers a full-size berth with a memory foam mattress, pillow shams, and full-width storage beneath, providing comfortable private accommodations.

Power and Performance

The 350 SunSport is powered by twin 430 horsepower 8.2-liter MerCruiser engines paired with Bravo 3 outdrives, one of ten engine options available ranging from 300 to 480 horsepower. Engine access is facilitated by an electrically actuated hatch at the helm and a day hatch forward that also allows access to an optional 7.5 kW generator. Two engine flush quick-connects are located on the port bulwarks. The helm features a glare-reducing dash with outdrive trim indicators, a center-mounted compass, and a comprehensive instrument panel including a 9-inch multifunction display and a 7-inch selectable engine display with controls for features such as Skyhook and cruise control. Additional helm controls include illuminated rocker switches, a stereo remote, VHF radio with microphone, and polished stainless steel throttle and shift levers. The steering wheel is tilt-mounted, and joystick piloting controls are positioned on the right side for precise maneuvering. Double-wide helm seats with wraparound backs and flip bolsters provide comfort during operation.

Handling and On-Water Performance

With an overall length of 35 feet, a beam of 10 feet 9 inches, and a draft of 39 inches, the 350 SunSport weighs approximately 13,475 pounds empty. During testing with full fuel and two passengers, the estimated displacement was 14,812 pounds. The twin 430 horsepower engines enabled a top speed of 53.2 miles per hour. The optimal cruising speed was recorded at 34.5 miles per hour with a fuel consumption of 32.5 gallons per hour, equating to 1.1 miles per gallon and a range of approximately 155 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. The boat achieved planing speed in 4.8 seconds, accelerated to 20 miles per hour in 7.1 seconds, and reached 30 miles per hour in 12.8 seconds. Upon acceleration, the bow rises 16 degrees before settling into a 5-degree bow-high attitude. Proper trim adjustment is critical for performance, as excessive trim can cause bow oscillation. The boat exhibits a 16-degree roll during turns without chine walking, maintaining stability by dropping its shoulder slightly into the turn. While the 350 SunSport is optimized for straight-line cruising, it responds well to performance handling with appropriate throttle input. Docking is simplified by the responsive joystick system, allowing precise lateral and rotational control for smooth approaches.

Additional Features and Systems

The foredeck is accessed via center-mounted stairs with nonskid surfaces leading to a concealed ground tackle compartment housing a horizontally mounted Lumar windlass with an all-chain rode, chain stopper, and a stem-mounted stainless steel anchor roller. Foot controls for the windlass are located on either side. The rail height on the foredeck is 15 inches, providing safety without obstructing visibility. Electrical systems include main battery switches and master breakers located in the wet bar storage compartment. Shore power connections, TV hookups, and city water inlets are conveniently positioned on the starboard side of the transom.

Conclusion

The Formula 350 SunSport successfully combines refined aesthetics, thoughtful layout, and reliable performance into a well-crafted weekend cruiser. Its attention to detail in fit and finish, versatile living spaces, and advanced handling features make it a compelling choice for boaters seeking both comfort and capability. The seamless integration of technology and ergonomic design underscores Formula's commitment to quality and user experience.
