Overview

The Formula 380 Supersport Crossover (SSC) Outboard edition represents the latest iteration of the popular 380 Supersport series, now offered without inboard power. This versatile model accommodates a range of power options including triple 350, 400, or 400 racing engines, with the test boat equipped with triple 450 horsepower Mercury Racing outboards featuring joystick piloting. The design integrates performance, luxury, and entertainment capabilities, making it a well-rounded crossover suitable for diverse boating activities.

Exterior Design and Cockpit Features

At the stern, the 380 SSC OB features a spacious 10-foot by 3-foot 4-inch swim platform complemented by extended 4-foot 1-inch swim platforms on either side, each equipped with 8-inch pull-up cleats. The triple Mercury 450 Racing engines are flanked by hatches concealing four-step reboarding ladders on both sides. A notable addition is the 6-foot 5-inch padded leaning post, which enhances comfort and entertainment with six stainless steel beverage holders, while still allowing full engine tilt-out capability. Forward of the leaning post, sockets accommodate board storage racks. The cockpit includes a sun pad with reversible backrests, providing over three feet of usable sunbathing space even when the backs face forward. Dual stainless beverage holders and a starboard charge port are integrated into the combing, with storage beneath the sun pad. An optional Sure Shade awning extends electronically from beneath the hardtop to provide sun protection.

Cockpit and Bow Entertainment Areas

The cockpit deck is elevated by an 8-inch step and accessed through a 2-foot 1-inch port walkthrough protected by a stainless steel-framed acrylic gate. Entertainment amenities include a Rockford Fosgate stereo system and an optional electric grill atop the port side. Seating arrangements feature a U-shaped settee to starboard with storage beneath all seats, lumbar grab handles, beverage holders, and connectivity options including cell phone integration. Pedestal bases allow for two tables or conversion into an additional sun pad, with tables stored under the seats. Opposing bench seating to port mirrors these features. The decking is covered with snap-in rubberized non-skid mats, with vinyl decking available as an option. A refreshment center with a Corian countertop, covered sink, trash receptacle, storage drawers, refrigeration, and a pedestal TV socket is positioned ahead of the port seating. A 1-foot 10-inch walkthrough to the bow is accessed through a sliding windshield section and acrylic door. The bow area offers wraparound seating with padded bolsters, extensive storage, elongated grab rails, and additional beverage holders and connectivity. Pedestal bases accommodate tables, and sockets in the grab rails allow for sunshade supports with dedicated storage for filler plugs.

Interior Living Spaces

Accessed via a door to port of the helm, the cabin offers a headroom of 6 feet 5 inches. Forward is a U-shaped seating area surrounding a pedestal table that converts into a berth by lowering the table, adding a filler cushion, and lifting the forward bolster. Storage for the table is located overhead. Windows with opening sections to port and starboard provide natural light and ventilation. The modest galley includes a sink with a slide-away cover and a microwave positioned above. A 32-inch TV is mounted on the aft bulkhead facing the dinette. A refrigerator is located portside near the companionway. Below the main deck, the mid-berth features a large berth with storage, a TV at the foot, and a window above the headboard. The head compartment to starboard is well-appointed with 6 feet 2 inches of headroom.

Helm and Operational Features

The helm station is situated to starboard and is equipped with dual 18-inch displays, a 7-inch Mercury display, and a bow thruster joystick located to the left of the wheel. Additional features include a glove box with an inductive charger, connectivity plugs, electrical rocker switches, and climate control vents. To the right of the wheel are controls for the joystick, trim tabs, forward display remotes, and digital throttle and shift controls. Climate control pads and switches for air conditioning and underwater lights are positioned further aft. The helm seat is a true triple-wide measuring 45 inches, with individual flip bolsters, dual footrests, and under-seat storage for a 35-quart cooler on a slide-out tray. Visibility is excellent thanks to a large single-piece windshield, supplemented by an opening walkthrough windshield to port, side windows, and an opening sunroof with shades.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems

An electrically actuated hatch at the bow provides access to the ground tackle system, which includes a Lumar windlass with a chain rode, chain stopper, and a polished stainless steel anchor on a through-stem roller. Adjacent access ports lead to the rode locker with a quick-connect washdown hose. The stern houses an electrically actuated hatch granting access to mechanical components, with a secondary deck hatch allowing cockpit access when open. The engine compartment features a sea chest to minimize through-hull fittings, with all connections double clamped and labeled. House batteries and charger are located to port, with the water heater just aft. Engine start batteries are positioned aft, and a 7.5 kW generator with battery switch is forward. Shore power, TV, and cable connections are mounted on the port transom with storage above. Rocker switches for main engine start batteries and parallel switching are also located under this hatch. The main electrical panel is situated near the companionway, with 12V controls on top and generator and 120V controls below.

Performance Evaluation

Powered by triple Mercury Racing 450 horsepower outboards turning 14.6 by 20-inch propellers, the 380 SSC OB achieved a top speed of 63.5 miles per hour at 5,900 rpm. Economic cruise was recorded at 43.5 miles per hour at 4,500 rpm consuming 55 gallons per hour, equating to 0.8 miles per gallon and a range of approximately 214 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve from a 300-gallon capacity. The boat planes quickly, averaging 3.7 seconds to get on plane. Acceleration times to 20, 30, 40, and 50 miles per hour were 9.7, 16.3, 23.5, and 35.9 seconds respectively. The hull utilizes Formula's proven Fastech twin-step bottom design, balancing speed and comfort effectively. The boat handles waves smoothly and executes turns cleanly, leaning noticeably under aggressive maneuvers but maintaining stability. Mercury's joystick piloting system provides precise and intuitive control for docking, with each engine independently controlled for maximum maneuverability.

Build Quality and Finishes

Formula distinguishes itself by utilizing a high-gloss painted hull finish rather than traditional gel coat, which oxidizes and requires extensive maintenance. This painted hull approach results in superior aesthetics and durability, often making Formula boats among the best looking on the water. The Formula Flex system allows interchangeable accent colors, while the Formula MyWay upgrade offers extensive customization with a full range of Pantone and automotive colors. The 380 SSC OB exhibits the high-quality fit and finish, solid build, and refined handling characteristics that are hallmarks of the Formula brand.

Conclusion

The Formula 380 Supersport Crossover Outboard edition combines powerful performance, versatile entertainment spaces, and thoughtful design features into a cohesive package. Its triple 450 horsepower Mercury Racing outboards deliver impressive speed and responsive handling, while the well-appointed cockpit, bow, and interior spaces provide comfort and convenience for extended outings. The advanced helm controls and joystick piloting enhance operational ease, and the superior painted hull finish underscores the boat's premium build quality. Overall, the 380 SSC OB exemplifies Formula's commitment to blending performance, luxury, and innovation in a crossover platform.
