Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Formula 400 Super Sport Crossover (SSC) represents another innovative addition to Formula's lineup of crossover boats. Designed by John Adams, who has over 45 years of experience crafting Formula hulls, the 400 SSC incorporates advanced hull design features aimed at optimizing performance, comfort, and efficiency. This review focuses on the boat's operating characteristics, performance metrics, and helm features observed during a test conducted by BoatTest.com.

Hull Design and Running Surface

The Formula 400 SSC features a FasTech hull with stepped surfaces that improve hydrodynamics. The hull entry is sharp to minimize pounding in rough conditions, while the bottom transitions to a 21-degree deadrise at the transom—a deliberate compromise between the ideal 24 degrees for deep-vee comfort and speed. The forward step is 3.5 inches deep with 4-inch wide strakes and a 4.5-inch wide chine, introducing air beneath the hull to reduce water suction and drag. Between the steps, a single 3.5-inch wide strake runs along the hull, aiding lift and stability. The aft step measures 4.5 inches deep, leading to a smooth hull surface with a 5.5-inch wide chine near the transom. Trim tabs are 26 inches long, and a 7.25-inch diameter tunnel in the forefoot accommodates an optional electric bow thruster.

Dimensions and Weight

The Formula 400 SSC measures 40 feet in length overall with a 12-foot beam. The boat's empty weight is 23,700 pounds. For the test, with 400 gallons of fuel, no water, and three people aboard, the estimated test weight was approximately 26,705 pounds.

Power and Performance

Powered by four Mercury Verado 350-horsepower outboards equipped with Rev 4, 14 5/8 by 19-inch propellers, the Formula 400 SSC achieved a top speed of 61.1 miles per hour at 6,430 RPM. The optimal cruising speed was 50.8 miles per hour at 5,500 RPM, where fuel consumption was 73.9 gallons per hour, yielding approximately 0.7 miles per gallon and a range of 247 statute miles. Acceleration was brisk, with the boat planing in 4.7 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in 8.4 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 12.5 seconds. Handling at high speeds demonstrated a confident inward lean during hard turns, characteristic of Formula's racing heritage. At low speeds, Mercury's joystick piloting system facilitated precise maneuvering, with the optional bow thruster providing additional control in challenging wind or current conditions.

Helm and Control Systems

The helm area reflects Formula’s racing DNA, featuring a three-position helm seat and a wide dashboard designed for ergonomic command and control. Two widescreen Raymarine Axiom XL multifunction displays are integrated into a liquid black floating panel. The Mercury joystick piloting control is prominently positioned above the binnacle, complemented by trim tab controls, throttle and shift levers, and electronic remotes within easy reach. Engine management is centralized via the Mercury SmartKraft VesselView display, providing comprehensive monitoring and tuning capabilities. Electrical systems are managed through rocker switches and a digital switching touchscreen accessible via the multifunction displays or an iPad. Additional helm features include a power sunroof control, a locking glove box with USB and card slots for chart plotters, a phone tray, and quarter light vents for natural ventilation. The breaker reset panel is located in the helm footwell, though its placement may hinder label visibility.

Exterior Features and Deck Layout

The Formula 400 SSC’s exterior includes a large two-panel windshield with minimal distortion and a sliding section that opens to the foredeck, secured by a spring-loaded barrel latch. A clear acrylic air dam helps reduce wind exposure. The foredeck is equipped with a hatch concealing an electric windlass and a through-the-stem anchor pulpit. Non-skid surfaces and 8-inch mooring cleats enhance safety and utility. Access to the large lazarette beneath the port-side transom walkway is facilitated by electric rams that lift the aft seat and sun pad. This storage area houses batteries, inverters, fuel filters, a genset, and a fixed fire extinguisher system. Additional transom features include a water hookup, dual 30-amp shore power connections, a TV hookup, battery switches, shore power breakers, and a locker for shore power cords. The swim platform incorporates hatch lids that expand usable deck space when down and provide access to rigging tubes and hydraulic lines when flipped up. Pull-up cleats at the platform corners offer discreet mooring options.

Additional Operational Features

The boat includes an automated flushing system for all four outboards, simplifying maintenance by allowing the operator to connect a dock hose and initiate the flushing cycle with a single button. The helm console provides a three-step companionway to the lower deck, with convenient access to air conditioning and stereo remotes, as well as a magnetic charging station for the iPad controlling digital switching. The galley area features a locker beneath the counter containing the manual control for the 56-gallon water system, a refrigerator to port, AC and DC electrical panels aft, and a fire extinguisher locker forward.

Conclusion

The Formula 400 Super Sport Crossover demonstrates a thoughtful balance of performance, handling, and operational convenience. Its advanced hull design and powerful quad outboard propulsion deliver impressive speed and responsive handling, while the helm layout and integrated systems provide intuitive control. Exterior features support both comfort and functionality, with ample storage and maintenance access. Overall, the 400 SSC reflects Formula’s commitment to combining racing heritage with crossover versatility.
