Formula 310 FX5: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Formula 310 FX5 is designed to blend the sleek styling of Formula's sport boats with the performance attributes of their Fastech Performance line. Measuring 31 feet in length overall with a beam of 9 feet 6 inches and a draft just over 3 feet, this model aims to deliver both eye appeal and functional versatility. With a dry weight of 9,750 pounds, the test boat, carrying three-quarters fuel and two people, weighed just over 10,700 pounds.

Exterior Design and Helm Features

Access to the bow is facilitated by a comfortable windshield walkthrough equipped with grab rails, while non-skid surfaces run down the center of the foredeck. Two side hatches and minimal bow rails flank the bow area, which features a forward hatch covering the anchor locker prepared for an optional windlass. Custom logo pull-up cleats are positioned on either side. The helm station includes a double-wide wraparound seat with dual flip-up bolsters, offering excellent ergonomics and visibility. The instrument panel is highlighted by large Laborsi gauges, including a GPS-based speedometer with maximum recall, complemented by a standard Garmin GPS unit and a premium steering wheel. The carbon fiber matting overlay adds a refined aesthetic to the helm. Controls are intuitively placed for ease of use, and the observer benefits from a dedicated footrest and brace steps, enhancing comfort and stability in rough conditions.

Cockpit and Entertainment Amenities

The cockpit features a portside entertainment center finished with carbon fiber overlays, housing a sink with hot and cold water options (contingent on the water heater), a wastebasket, and storage compartments that include the main battery switches. An optional pull-out refrigerator is also integrated, designed to prevent contents from spilling when opened. Opposite the entertainment center is J-shaped seating with ample storage beneath. The starboard seat includes a dedicated mount for the cockpit table, while the aft seat functions both as a rear-facing rumble seat and converts into a double-wide sun pad, demonstrating efficient use of space. The aft deck is surfaced with wood grain vinyl, and storage compartments under the rumble seat accommodate fenders. Additional features include LED lighting on the hatch and optional shore power, TV hookup, and city water inlets on the starboard side.

Engine Access and Swim Platform

Engine compartment access is controlled via a helm panel switch, raising a hatch that extends into the walkway leading to the swim platform. This design provides unobstructed access to the twin engines, which in the test configuration were twin 380-horsepower Mercruiser 8.2 MAGs. The 16-inch-wide walkthrough to the swim platform includes an inward-opening gate, enhancing safety by preventing accidental falls overboard.

Interior Living Spaces

Below deck, the Formula 310 FX5 offers comfortable V-shaped seating upholstered in ultra-soft leather with embroidered FX logos and carbon fiber accent strips. Cushions stored forward enable conversion of the seating area into a berth, complemented by a high-low table stored aft. Storage is available beneath the seats and near the stairway. The overhead surfaces combine crushed velvet and vinyl materials, reflecting high-quality fit and finish. To starboard is a modest wet head, while the port side houses a galley equipped with a stainless steel sink, refrigerator, and microwave.

Power and Performance

Powered by twin 380-horsepower Mercruiser 8.2 MAG engines, the 310 FX5 delivers a distinctive, throaty exhaust note through its through-hull system. During testing, the boat achieved a top speed of 57 miles per hour at 4,500 rpm, consuming 65.5 gallons per hour and yielding approximately 0.87 miles per gallon for a range of 102 miles. The optimal cruising speed was identified at 3,000 rpm and 33.3 miles per hour, with a fuel burn of 21.55 gallons per hour and a range of 181 miles. Acceleration was brisk, with a time to plane of 4.4 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in 8.5 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 12.2 seconds. The boat exhibits a roughly 14-degree bow rise upon acceleration, which can momentarily obscure the horizon from a seated position but is mitigated when standing on the bolster. Handling characteristics include a tendency to lose speed in turns, suggesting a technique of adding power entering the turn and easing off on exit. The helm is responsive at both low and cruising speeds, making the boat enjoyable to drive and suitable for water sports.

Conclusion

The Formula 310 FX5 successfully integrates stylish design with strong performance and thoughtful functionality. Its combination of comfortable accommodations, efficient use of cockpit space, and responsive handling make it a versatile and engaging boat. The attention to detail in both aesthetics and ergonomics reflects Formula's commitment to quality, resulting in a vessel that is both visually appealing and enjoyable to operate.
