Roomy and robust 40' Doral Mediterra with gorgeous Silver hull side paint. Excellent access fore and aft with a walk-through windshield and double centerline transom door. Social seating in the cockpit is accented with a grill and sink. Down in the cabin, you are greeted with gorgeous cherry wood and teak and holly floors accented with deep pile carpeting. The galley is fully equipped to port, with Master forward and a Guest stateroom aft, both with ensuite heads.

Manufacturer's Overview:

The Doral Mediterra 40 is powered by Volvo Penta IPS500 pods. As verified by Boat Test, her cruising sweet spot is 30 mph, consuming an efficient 1.25 mpg, and topping out at 40 mph. Around the docks, the joy stick makes for no-fuss maneuvering. Her deep V hull and lower center of gravity make her an exceptional blue water yacht.

This is no high-production sports cruiser. Doral's attention to detail, quality engineering, and craftsmanship are best in class.

There are two staterooms and two heads, and the benefits of design elements that any cruising owners would appreciate. For example, the one level cockpit and helm sole make for a much safer, comfortable, and congenial space.

Doral Mediterra: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Durrell Mediterra is a Canadian-designed and built pleasure boat that has been gaining popularity in U.S. ports. This model is crafted as an entertainment and pleasure platform, specifically optimized to leverage the advanced power and maneuverability of Volvo's IPS drive system. The design emphasizes ease of control and versatility, making it suitable for a variety of boating conditions while maintaining a refined aesthetic and functional layout.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The Mediterra features an integral swim platform that seamlessly integrates with the boat's lines, providing easy access on and off the vessel via a central walkthrough. The swim platform includes practical features such as stereo remote controls, storage trunks with water connections for washdowns, and a concealed four-step swim ladder. The aft cockpit is designed on a single level with no steps, enhancing safety and flow. Seating nearly encircles the cockpit, with a removable table on the starboard side that converts the area into a spacious sunbed. The port side hosts a cockpit wet bar equipped with a stainless steel sink, solid countertop, optional electric cooktop, Uline ice maker, and Norco refrigerator. Beneath the cockpit sole, twin Volvo IPS 500 engines are housed, providing ample room for tanks, heaters, generators, and routine maintenance access. Forward access is facilitated by a somewhat narrow walkway with sturdy stainless steel grab rails leading to a broad bow area, which can be outfitted with twin teak loungers and a teak seat in the bow pulpit. The gull-wing anchor locker conceals a hand-held remote windlass control, washdown, and vertical storage lockers for fenders and anchor equipment.

Bridge and Helm Station

The helm area is thoughtfully arranged with a triple-wide bench seat featuring a driver's bolster for comfortable standing operation. The helm wheel is an elegant mahogany design accented with stainless steel and leather. Instrumentation includes two Raymarine E120 navigation displays, a Volvo engine management system, and a Clarion stereo with MP3 connectivity. Controls are logically grouped with rocker switches to the left of the wheel, a VHF radio mounted below, and an optional joystick drive system positioned to the right alongside the Volvo throttle and shift controls. The test model was equipped with a full hardtop, providing protection and ample space for mounting navigation and communication equipment such as a remote spotlight, radar dome, and antennas.

Interior Living Spaces

Down below, the cabin entry features steps with rubber treads and a vertical grab bar for safety. The galley, located on the port side, is appointed with wood cabinetry, a stainless steel coffee maker, microwave convection oven, solid surface countertops with a stainless sink, and a concealed two-burner cooktop. The test boat included a NovaCool side-by-side refrigerator/freezer. The salon offers a semi-circular lounge with a solid wood table that can be lowered to convert into an additional berth. Teak floor accents enhance the interior ambiance. Entertainment is supported by a Clarion DVD player, a 12-volt accessory socket, and a stereo system with a six-CD changer housed in the cabinetry.

Private Accommodations

The mid-cabin on the starboard side features cabinetry with drawers and hanging storage, a large double berth, and an LCD TV, creating a comfortable and spacious sleeping area. A space-saving pocket door enhances privacy without sacrificing room. The master stateroom includes an island berth with overhead storage compartments, portals, and reading lights. A makeup station with mirror and storage is located on the port wall. Entertainment is provided by an LCD TV mounted on the starboard side. Notably, the master berth includes a power lift headrest for comfortable nighttime reading or viewing.

Power and Performance

The Mediterra measures 40 feet in length overall with a beam of 13 feet 3 inches. It is designed primarily for the Volvo IPS 500 engine and drive system but can also be equipped with various Volvo and Mercruiser engines up to 425 horsepower. The IPS drives contribute to excellent maneuverability, making the boat easy to handle in diverse conditions. While the vessel is somewhat slow to plane, it possesses sufficient power for extended cruising. The optimal cruising speed was observed at approximately 3,500 RPM, yielding 26.9 miles per hour and an estimated range of 173 miles on a full fuel tank. The top speed reached 38.2 miles per hour.

Conclusion

The Durrell Mediterra offers a well-balanced combination of spaciousness, comfort, and advanced technology. Its thoughtful design accommodates socializing and relaxation both topside and below deck, making it suitable for weekend outings or longer voyages. The integration of the Volvo IPS system enhances handling and control, while the quality of finishes and amenities provides a refined boating experience. Overall, the Mediterra stands out as a versatile and elegant platform for pleasure cruising.
