1997 Rozema 50' Custom Aluminum Aquaculture Landing Craft - "Jimmie"
Purpose-built. Beachable. Built by the yard the Coast Guard trusts with 35-foot seas.
50' Length Overall · 1997 Rozema Boat Works, Bayview WA · Twin 300 hp Mercury Outboards · Aluminum Welded Landing Craft Hull · Beachable Shallow-Draft Tideland Capable
Rozema Boat Works has been welding aluminum on Padilla Bay since Alle Rozema came over from Holland and opened the shop in 1955. Three generations later, his grandsons Dirk and Jason still run it and in 2025 the United States Coast Guard handed that same yard a $70.9 million contract to build self-righting heavy-weather rescue boats rated for 35-foot seas, 25-foot surf and 60-knot winds. When you buy a Rozema hull, that is the standard of construction you are buying into.
Jimmie is a 50-foot custom aluminum landing craft built for tideland shellfish production, and she is configured for the work in ways a general-purpose workboat never is. The landing-craft hull is shallow enough to take the ground and dry out on gravel on a falling tide she is photographed doing exactly that, bow-in on the beach with her boom topped up. Twin 300 hp Mercury outboards tilt clear of the bottom, so there are no shafts, struts or running gear to sacrifice to the flats. That single decision is what separates a boat that can work the tidelands from one that merely visits them.
On deck she carries a hydraulic boom crane and a full-length conveyor system for broadcasting cultch, feeding a large open bulk deck fenced with stanchion rails and rated for serious payload shown loaded rail-to-rail with shell. Forward, a raised pilothouse with wraparound glass gives the visibility close-quarters beach work demands. Bare, unpainted marine-grade aluminum throughout: no gelcoat to chalk, no blisters, no rot, and a hull that can be cut, welded and modified by any competent aluminum yard on the coast.
She has spent her working life on Hood Canal, one of the most productive oyster-growing estuaries in North America, and is offered in excellent, well-maintained condition by her long-term operator. For a shellfish grower, marine contractor, or tribal enterprise that needs a proven beachable production platform, boats like this are not on the market often Rozema builds them one at a time, to order, and the owners tend to keep them.
