Chaparral Sunesta: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Chaparral 224 Sinesta is an entry-level sport deck boat that skillfully blends the agile handling characteristics of a sport boat with the spaciousness typical of a deck boat. Designed to offer versatility and comfort, this model caters to boaters seeking both performance and ample room for socializing and relaxation.

Helm and Cockpit Features

The helm of the 224 Sinesta is thoughtfully designed with a dark panel to minimize glare, enhancing visibility during operation. Analog gauges flank a central pull-out storage compartment, which can be replaced with an optional Garmin GPS unit. A distinctive paneled dimmer knob controls instrument lighting, and a compass is positioned directly in line with the helm seat for easy navigation. The test boat featured an upgraded leather steering wheel with a logo that remains upright regardless of wheel position. Beneath the console, a courtesy light provides illumination. On the port side, a console door with dual latches opens to a changing room that can be optionally equipped with a head, port light, and sink. Both captain and observer seats are comfortable bucket-style, featuring wrap-around support, sliding and swiveling capabilities, and flip-up bolsters for added versatility.

Cockpit Layout and Amenities

The cockpit includes L-shaped seating with storage compartments beneath, except for the aft seat, which sits atop the engine box. Dedicated storage is provided for a removable 25-quart cooler, and a side-mount pedestal base accommodates an optional cockpit table. The cockpit drains lead directly into the bilge for efficient water management. A notable feature is the aft seat’s ability to fold forward, transforming into a sun pad with a lounge position for enhanced comfort. On the starboard side, a standard wet bar includes a recessed sink with a pull-out sprayer set into a solid surface countertop, complemented by a conveniently located trash receptacle. Additional storage houses the battery switch and an optional inflator for water toys. The walk-through to the windshield measures 19 inches wide, and an access door to the helm console doubles as an air dam.

Bow Area and Additional Features

The bow area benefits from a wide tech design, creating a spacious environment with contoured seating and storage beneath. An insulated cooler is integrated under the forward cushion, featuring a drainage system. The optional cockpit table can also be installed here with a side-mount base. An optional filler cushion converts the entire bow seating area into a large sun pad. At the very front, there is an optional second shower concealed near a four-step reboarding ladder, enhancing convenience for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts.

Power and Performance

Powered by a Mercruiser 260 horsepower catalyzed 5.0-liter MPI engine paired with an Alpha One drive and a 17-inch Mercury inertia propeller, the 224 Sinesta demonstrated strong performance during testing. The boat achieved a top speed of 46.9 miles per hour at 5120 RPM, consuming fuel at a rate of 23.2 gallons per hour, which provided a range of approximately 89 miles. The most efficient cruising speed was found at 3000 RPM, delivering 23.4 miles per hour while reducing fuel consumption to 6.1 gallons per hour. At this setting, the boat could operate for over seven hours and cover 169 miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. The hull’s extended V-plane running surface contributed to a quick planing time of 3.8 seconds, with acceleration to 20 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 9.5 seconds. During acceleration, the bow rises 16 degrees without obstructing forward visibility. The boat handles turns with a slight slide and rolls 16 degrees into turns, providing a comfortable and controlled ride. When decelerating, the stern settles first, again raising the bow and preserving visibility.

Engine Compartment and Storage

The engine compartment is accessed via a hatch supported by two struts, allowing easy lifting. The space is ample enough to reach both sides of the engine for maintenance, with the forward end of the compartment positioned low for improved accessibility. Between the forward seats, there is a large sole storage compartment measuring 1 foot 8 inches deep and 6 feet long, featuring a hatch held open by a strut and a drain leading into the bilge.

Stern Features and Additional Equipment

At the stern, the boat is equipped with a full-beam molded swim platform extending two feet from the transom. A stereo remote control is conveniently located on the port side near the outdrive trim switch. The water fill is positioned adjacent to an optional shower, and fuel fills are accessible on both port and starboard sides. A double-wide aft-facing rumble seat, measuring 2 feet 11 inches wide, offers a comfortable spot to relax when the boat is stationary. The standard bimini top includes forward eyes and glass windows without requiring a full wraparound canvas package. The windows measure approximately 1 foot 10 inches across in the center and 1 foot 11 inches on the sides, supported by a solid bar for the forward frame instead of the typical strap, enhancing durability and aesthetics.

Conclusion

The Chaparral 224 Sinesta presents a compelling combination of sporty handling and spacious deck boat accommodations. Its well-thought-out helm and cockpit features, efficient powertrain, and versatile seating arrangements make it suitable for a variety of recreational boating activities. The boat’s performance metrics demonstrate strong acceleration, comfortable handling, and efficient cruising capabilities, while its ample storage and optional amenities provide added convenience and comfort for day outings on the water.
