Chaparral 307 SSX: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Chaparral 307 SSX is a performance bow rider that combines class and comfort in a 30-foot package. Designed with a focus on upscale features and practical functionality, this model offers a versatile powerboat experience suitable for both spirited driving and relaxed cruising.
Power and Performance
Our test boat was equipped with twin Volvo Penta V8 300 horsepower engines, although Chaparral offers a range of power options including single engines from 380 to 430 horsepower and twin engines between 220 and 300 horsepower. The boat measures 30 feet 6 inches in length overall, with a beam of 9 feet 6 inches and a draft of 31 inches. The dry weight is approximately 9,200 pounds, and with fuel and passengers, the test weight was estimated at 10,405 pounds. Powered by the twin Volvo Penta V8 300s with F6 propellers, the 307 SSX achieved a top speed of 52.2 miles per hour at 4,980 RPM, consuming 45 gallons per hour and providing a range of 131 miles. The most efficient cruise speed was 29.6 miles per hour at 3,000 RPM, burning 17.5 gallons per hour and offering a range of 190 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The boat planes quickly, reaching planing speed in 4.2 seconds, accelerating to 20 miles per hour in 6.1 seconds and 30 miles per hour in 9.4 seconds. Handling in choppy conditions was notably smooth and dry, with stable tracking and minimal pounding. High-performance turns exhibited some chine walk, but this was limited to aggressive maneuvers rarely performed in typical use. The bow rise on acceleration was a modest 8.5 degrees, maintaining good forward visibility, while the boat rolled about 10 degrees into turns and settled stern-first when power was reduced. Docking was simplified by the Volvo Penta sterndrive joystick, which provided excellent control in crosswinds and currents.
Exterior Design and Deck Features
The 307 SSX features a well-thought-out exterior with practical and stylish elements. The battery switches are conveniently located under the seats, with the battery itself housed opposite and protected by a drain system. The engine compartment is spacious, including a work platform and an automatic discharge fire extinguisher as standard. The test boat was fitted with an optional quiet through-hull exhaust system. Ground tackle is managed by a Lumar windlass with a cleat under the hatch for securing the rode and dedicated storage for the manual winch tool. Foredeck controls are easily accessible, and the bow is equipped with logo cast pull-up cleats on either side. The full-beam swim platform extends 2 feet 5 inches aft and includes a grab handle for swimmers, pull-up cleats recessed to avoid tripping hazards, and a four-step reboarding ladder. Optional photique decking matches the interior color scheme. The aft-facing seat converts into a sun pad, complemented by a conveniently located stereo remote.
Helm and Cockpit
The helm features a soft-touch basket-weave patterned dash designed to reduce glare and enhance aesthetics. Black-faced gauges with chrome bezels and anti-fog lenses flank an optional Garmin 741XS chartplotter mounted in a finished wood frame. Rocker switches are mounted on a chrome faceplate, with a prominently placed fuel gauge and twin EVC displays below. The optional sterndrive joystick is positioned to the right of the digital engine controls, which offer a variety of features. The steering wheel includes a distinctive floating logo in the center. The cockpit seating is arranged for comfort and socializing, with wraparound seating to port and a double bench seat to starboard. An optional wet bar replaces the starboard seating and includes a 12-volt power supply, a sink with pull-out sprayer recessed into a solid surface countertop, a stainless grab handle, and a 25-quart cooler in dedicated storage. A cockpit refrigerator is also available as an option. Both the captain and observer seats are wide and well-padded, with the captain’s seat featuring a slider release and the observer seat including a flip-up bolster and lumbar support.
Bow and Additional Features
Access to the bow is provided through a walk-through windshield with interconnected latches. The bow seating area is spacious enough for comfortable leg stretching and includes a stereo remote tucked under a padded bolster. The sport arch is constructed from custom-painted aluminum, equipped with a bimini top for sun protection and standard LED tricolor lighting for nighttime use. A standard head compartment is appointed with high-end features including a vacuum flush toilet with a china bowl, stainless steel sink with pull-out faucet, mirrored storage cabinet, lighting, power vent, wood flooring, and an opening port light. Storage is abundant throughout the boat, including clever solutions such as a pull-out drawer within the cockpit index storage, additional compartments under seats, behind the helm air dam, and between the bow seats. The cockpit is fully lined and designed for easy washdown, with water draining overboard through dedicated cockpit drains. Optional snap-in carpeting is available but may be omitted for easier maintenance.
Conclusion
Chaparral’s 307 SSX is a premium build that integrates upscale features as standard equipment, delivering a refined blend of performance, comfort, and style. The boat’s thoughtful design, smooth handling, and versatile amenities make it well-suited for both high-performance boating and leisurely outings. Overall, the 307 SSX represents a significant advancement in Chaparral’s bow rider lineup, offering a compelling option for discerning boaters.
