It was originally designed as a racer by Sparkman & Stephens and was put into production and sold as the Yankee 38. Catalina bought the molds and Frank Butler made several changes including adding a balanced spade rudder, a high-aspect-ratio rig with taller mast & shorter boom in addition to replacing the flush deck with a cabin house to make the sailboat more appealing to a coastal cruising market.
She was repowered in 2003 with a Westerbeke 33 (4-cycle 30-35 hp).
