The "SOUND VENTURE" is a nice, well-maintained CATALINA 34 with both the desirable Wing Keel (WK) underbody that has a 3'10" draft and the optional Tall Rig (TR) features. She is a 1988 model & was delivered to her first Owners for that Season. With her exceptionally effective layout that features a light, roomy interior & large Forward & Aft Cabins, the big cockpit also served to make the CATALINA 34 one of the most popular yachts of her type for many years. In fact, over 1400 CATALNA 34's were produced from 1985 onwards!
The Owners have been diligent in taking good care of their "SOUND VENTURE". Just some of the updates include new Bimini (2012) SUNBRELLA canvas, hot water heater (2013), HOOD Roller Furler (2013), engine alternator (2013), engine start battery (2014), SUNBRELLA UV tabling cover for the 155% Genoa (2014), engine raw (seawater) pump (2015), fuel pump (2015) & a new engine water pump (2015). In addition, her bottom paint was stripped and epoxy barrier undercoat applied (2012). The performance electronics include (3) newer DMI electronics (replacement DATAMARINE) units with a new depth-sounder transducer (2014) and with DMI Speed /Log & Wind (AWI / WS) functions. These DMI's are mounted in EDSON pods at the Helm Station. Her custom FAIRCLOUGH canvas winter cover offers good protection for this investment in the off-Season as well.
Attractively-priced and with knowledgeable Owners who obviously care, the "SOUND VENTURE" provides a nice opportunity to obtain a proper yacht that requires just her Spring Commissioning process for the 2016 Season. In anticipation of that, both the launching & the just-applied bottom paint are included in her Asking Price. Viewings .. and offers are encouraged!

The Biggest Pros and Cons
The 1988 Catalina 34 Wing Keel TR offers a blend of comfortable cruising and practical performance, making it a popular choice among sailors. Here are some of the pros and cons of this model:
Pros
Shallow Draft: The wing keel design provides a shallow draft of around 4 feet, allowing access to shallower waters and easier trailering compared to deeper fin keels.
Stable and Sturdy: The wing keel offers good stability and reduces heeling, making for a comfortable sailing experience especially in coastal and inland waters.
Spacious Interior: The Catalina 34 is known for its roomy cabin layout, providing ample living space, comfortable berths, and a functional galley, ideal for extended cruising.
Good Performance: The tall rig (TR) version provides improved sailing performance with better sail area, enhancing light wind capabilities.
Durable Construction: Built with solid fiberglass hulls, Catalina 34s are known for their durability and ease of maintenance.
Cons
Reduced Upwind Performance: Compared to deeper fin keel versions, the wing keel may not point as high into the wind, resulting in slightly reduced upwind performance.
Wing Keel Maintenance: The wing keel’s shape can trap mud and marine growth, requiring more diligent cleaning, especially if sailing in shallow or muddy areas.
Heavier Weight: The wing keel adds weight low down, which can make the boat feel less responsive in certain conditions compared to lighter fin keel designs.
Older Design: As a 1988 model, some onboard systems and equipment may be outdated and could require upgrades or maintenance.
Limited Racing Capability: While good for cruising, the Catalina 34 Wing Keel TR is not typically favored for competitive racing due to its keel design and heavier displacement.
Made For
The 1988 Catalina 34 Wing Keel TR is ideal for sailors seeking a versatile and comfortable cruising sailboat. Its wing keel design allows for shallow water navigation without sacrificing stability, making it perfect for coastal cruising and exploring bays and inlets. With ample interior space and thoughtful amenities, it suits couples or small families looking for extended weekend adventures or longer coastal voyages. The boat’s manageable size and easy handling also make it a great choice for sailors who want a reliable and enjoyable vessel that balances performance with comfort.
