Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The 170 Montauk features a thoughtfully designed exterior with nearly 18 square feet of open space in the stern area. The transom includes steps for easy boarding and disembarking, which can be reconfigured into jump seats. A full bench seat with ample storage underneath folds down to create a sun pad. The stern also offers a reversible helm seat that provides aft-facing seating, ideal for supervising swimmers or relaxing. Safety is enhanced by high rails measuring 33 inches at the bow and 30 inches at the stern, with options for a full or split bow rail to facilitate boarding. The bow area includes a large casting platform that can be converted into a sun pad with cushions and contains storage beneath. An anchor locker is positioned fully forward. Additional features include a ski tow arch, four rod holders across the stern, and a convenient rail around the windshield to assist movement along the deck.

Helm and Console Features

The helm station has been elevated and widened in the redesign, complementing the increased beam of five inches to a total of 7 feet 3 inches. Despite the wider beam, the boat maintains 20 inches of side deck space on each side. The helm layout is straightforward, emphasizing simplicity with an electrical system, fuel system, and Seastar hydraulic steering. Instrumentation includes a compass aligned with the steering wheel, three gauges (tachometer, fuel, and volts), five rocker switches including a horn, and multiple beverage holders. Connectivity is provided through an accessory plug and a USB port linked to a Fusion stereo system. The adjustable helm seat offers four positions, allowing for forward or aft-facing seating as well as a leaning post configuration. Acceleration was brisk, with planing achieved in 4.1 seconds and 20 miles per hour reached in 7.1 seconds. The hull redesign features a more routed keel radius, enhancing water adhesion and providing a comfortable roll during turns. The boat handles wakes smoothly with a subtle slicing entry and gentle re-entry, maintaining a dry ride courtesy of the classic bow design that directs the bow wave outward.
