Overview
The Beneteau Swift 52 is a cruising yacht designed for extended time away from the dock, combining robust construction with practical features tailored for offshore use. This vessel is characterized by its solid build quality, spacious engine room, and thoughtful deck layout, making it a capable and comfortable boat for serious boaters.
Exterior Design and Bow Features
At the bow, the Swift 52 features a Portuguese bridge that wraps around, providing a secure and comfortable area for crew members off watch. The foredeck includes a walkthrough with cushioned seating for forward-facing visibility in fair weather. The anchoring system is substantial, with large bollards and a heavy-duty winch designed to accommodate dual anchors, allowing for options such as carrying a spare anchor or setting a Bahamian moor.
Engine Room and Mechanical Systems
The engine room is notably spacious and accessible, with a fixed firefighting system positioned above the hot water heater for safety. Two fuel tanks, secured with robust straps, provide a combined capacity of 1,057 gallons. Fuel management is facilitated by ball valves and an interconnect system that balances fuel between tanks. The starboard tank supplies both the starboard engine and generator, with a Raycor filter and raw water strainer ensuring clean fuel and water flow. The prop shaft and dripless shaft seal are easily visible, and the water inlet features a clear hose with protective rubber tips on clamps to prevent injury. The engine room maintains nearly five feet of overhead clearance, allowing comfortable access around the engines.
Helm and Bridge Layout
The helm station is elevated eight inches above the main deck and equipped with a Benazzoni electrically adjustable helm seat offering fore and aft movement, height adjustment, and reclining capability, complemented by a flip-down footrest. The 29-inch leather-wrapped destroyer wheel provides comfortable and precise steering with six turns lock to lock. Engine controls and joystick throttles are ergonomically positioned, alongside Lenco trim tab controls with LED indicators, spotlight remote, and bow and stern thruster controls. The helm’s layout supports excellent visibility, especially when using the side door to the Portuguese bridge, enabling the captain to monitor the boat’s entire length during docking maneuvers. The window mullions are minimal yet strong, contributing to the vessel’s offshore CE B-class rating for 16 people.
Performance and Handling
The Swift 52 exhibits a stable and level ride, maintaining a balanced attitude even without trim tab adjustments. Its hull design, featuring chines that extend forward to form spray rails, effectively deflects water and enhances seakeeping. The boat handles waves smoothly, showing no tendency to be pushed off course when crossing wakes. Acceleration raises the bow approximately 10 degrees, settling to about five degrees at cruising speed, with trim tabs available to lower the bow at the expense of some performance. Equipped with twin 600-horsepower Cummins Mercruiser diesels, the boat achieved a top speed of 24.7 knots at 3100 rpm, consuming 60 gallons per hour and providing a range of 391 nautical miles. Optimal cruising speed was found at 2250 rpm, delivering 14 knots with a 27 gallons per hour burn and a 495 nautical mile range. A comfortable cruising speed of 20.9 knots at 2750 rpm resulted in a fuel burn of 43.8 gallons per hour and a 454 nautical mile range. The vessel planes in 7.2 seconds and reaches 20 miles per hour in 8.6 seconds. Steering responsiveness is excellent, with a tight turning radius of just over two and a half boat lengths and immediate reaction to helm inputs, facilitating easy navigation around obstacles such as crab pots.
Docking and Close Quarters Handling
Thanks to its deep, long keel, the Swift 52 offers strong directional stability, making close quarters handling manageable even for a cruising couple. The combination of joystick controls and bow and stern thrusters allows for precise maneuvering with minimal effort. Docking can be accomplished with a single crew member assisting by handing a spring line, while the captain maintains full control of the boat’s position. This ease of handling enhances the boat’s suitability for couples cruising without a large crew.
Conclusion
The Beneteau Swift 52 is a well-designed cruising yacht that balances offshore capability with user-friendly features. Its robust construction, spacious mechanical layout, comfortable helm station, and solid performance characteristics make it a dependable choice for extended voyages. The boat’s handling qualities, both underway and in close quarters, support confident operation by a small crew or couple, reinforcing its reputation as a true boater’s boat.
