Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Monte Carlo MC5 is a thoughtfully designed motor yacht that combines ease of operation with comfortable offshore capabilities. Powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS 600 engines, this vessel is engineered to accommodate up to 14 people under offshore conditions classified up to Wind Force 8, reflecting its robust build and seaworthiness. The MC5 features multiple control stations and a well-considered layout that facilitates both onboard comfort and practical handling.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The MC5's exterior includes practical features such as high side rails for safety, although the test captain noted the absence of grab handles on the side decks, which would aid in transitioning up the decks. The side decks themselves are 19 inches wide with 29-inch-high rails on the flybridge, and a low point on the deck allows water to drain efficiently. The ground tackle system is well equipped, featuring a Lumar windlass with hatches on both sides, a plow anchor, and a stainless steel anchor roller mounted on the bow. The open bow rail design allows the boat to bow into a dock conveniently, with a step integrated for ease of access. Remote controls for the windlass are located both at the bow and the helm.

Control Stations and Helm Features

The MC5 offers three distinct control stations, beginning with the lower helm. This station is outfitted with twin 15-inch Simrad displays, twin engine displays, a rudder angle indicator, and a compass aligned directly with the helm. The lower panel includes the Volvo Penta EVC display, Simrad controls, chain counter for the ground tackle, trim tab controls with LED indicators, digital engine controls, and an IPS joystick. However, the VHF radio placement was critiqued for being mounted too low, making it difficult to see the channel and prone to accidental channel changes. Visibility from the lower helm is generally excellent due to a large single-piece windshield, though thick window mullions and a low overhead obstruct side views, requiring the operator to duck down. Opening side windows and a conveniently positioned grab handle enhance docking maneuvers and safety. The flybridge helm, accessed via starboard-side stairs from the cockpit, features a similar non-glare dash, a single Simrad display, multiple Volvo Penta EVC displays, and a highly adjustable, comfortable helm seat that supports both seated and standing operation. Additionally, a cockpit control station provides further operational flexibility.

Power and Performance

Powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS 600 engines, the Monte Carlo MC5 demonstrated a top speed of 30 knots at 3600 RPM during sea trials, consuming 42.5 gallons per hour and yielding a range of approximately 219 nautical miles. The most efficient cruising speed was identified at 25.7 knots with 3250 RPM, reducing fuel consumption to 31.5 gallons per hour and extending the range to 253 nautical miles. This performance profile supports extended cruising between fueling points, suitable for voyages such as trips to Alaska or Mediterranean passages. The vessel's hull design, featuring a sharp entry, cuts cleanly through waves, providing an exceptionally comfortable ride with minimal pounding or harshness even when crossing waves. During turns, the boat leans about 10 degrees, maintaining comfort and stability. Although the test conditions were mild, the MC5's Class B ECB rating confirms its capability to handle offshore conditions up to Wind Force 8. Maneuverability is enhanced by the IPS joystick, enabling precise, gentle control for docking and close-quarters handling, making it accessible for operators of varying experience levels.

Conclusion

The Monte Carlo MC5 presents a well-rounded package that balances performance, comfort, and ease of handling. Its multiple control stations, efficient powertrain, and thoughtful deck layout contribute to a versatile and capable yacht suitable for both coastal cruising and offshore passages. While minor improvements such as additional grab handles and repositioning the VHF radio could enhance usability, the vessel's overall design and performance characteristics make it a compelling option for those seeking a comfortable and manageable motor yacht.
