Bayliner 215 DB: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Bayliner 215 Deck Boat is a versatile vessel designed to accommodate family and friends for a full day on the water, offering enhanced functionality and a more practical stern area. This model emphasizes ample storage and utility, aiming to support a variety of activities without the need to return to shore for supplies, refreshments, or restroom breaks.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

The 215 Deck Boat features an L-shaped cockpit seating arrangement with innovative storage underneath, including compartments sized to hold Tupperware-like bins. This allows users to pre-pack supplies for specific outings and stow them neatly without clutter. The forward cockpit area provides nearly six feet of space between bolsters and includes customizable storage compartments with removable dividers beneath the seats. At the bow, a deck area flanked by two storage compartments and a three-step reboarding ladder serves as both a casting platform and a base for optional fishing packages. The stern includes three-across aft-facing seating, with seat backs that lift for upright seating and additional storage access beneath the port seat. An extended swim platform adds two feet to the overall length, enhancing water access. Additional features include an in-deck insulated cooler, a pull-out shower, and a deployable cockpit table integrated into the starboard bulwarks.

Interior and Helm

The port console offers versatile storage or can accommodate an optional port-a-potty, providing 3 feet 6 inches of headroom—sufficient for children. Ventilation is supported by an opening port light. The helm has been redesigned with integrated 3-in-1 gauges and includes an armrest to facilitate precise speed adjustments. Storage within the helm console is ample enough to hold a 25-quart carry-on cooler. The engine hatch is equipped with gas-assist struts for ease of access.

Power and Performance

The Bayliner 215DB measures 20 feet 7 inches in length overall with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and an empty weight of 4,027 pounds. Our test configuration, including 50 gallons of fuel and two passengers, resulted in a test weight of 4,747 pounds. Powered by a 220-horsepower Mercruiser 4.3-liter engine paired with a 14.5x19 three-bladed BlackMax propeller, the boat achieved a top speed of 45.7 miles per hour at 5,000 rpm, consuming fuel at a rate of 19.3 gallons per hour and providing a range of approximately 117 miles. The most efficient cruising speed was recorded at 3,000 rpm and 26.3 miles per hour, with a fuel burn of 6.45 gallons per hour, allowing for nearly eight hours of operation and a range of 202 miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration was brisk, reaching planing speed in 3.8 seconds, 20 mph in 7.6 seconds, and 30 mph in 11.3 seconds. The boat maintains a typical 5-degree bow-high attitude at cruising speed, with a 16-degree bow rise upon acceleration that remains below the horizon line. Trim adjustments to the quarter mark optimize performance and attitude. Handling includes a 12-degree lean into turns, with minor chine walk noted in choppy conditions, consistent with the boat’s design focus on protected waters.

Versatility and Options

The 215 Deck Boat is adaptable for various recreational pursuits, including active water sports and fishing. Our test model was equipped with the Flight Series package, which features a collapsible wakeboard tower and distinctive hull-side graphics. The design and features underscore Bayliner’s commitment to delivering a versatile and affordable deck boat that competes effectively within its market segment.

Conclusion

The Bayliner 215 Deck Boat offers a thoughtful combination of storage, comfort, and performance tailored to day boating needs. Its innovative storage solutions, practical seating configurations, and solid performance metrics make it a compelling choice for families and recreational boaters seeking utility and versatility in a compact, affordable package.
