Bavaria VIRTESS 420 FLY: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Bavaria Virtus 420 Fly is a German-built yacht that demonstrates precision engineering and thoughtful innovation. Measuring 44 feet 8 inches, this vessel has been slightly modified for the North American market, including the addition of standard features such as air conditioning and a generator. The boat is designed to offer a blend of comfort, functionality, and style, with a focus on maximizing space and convenience both above and below deck.
Exterior Design and Flybridge
The exterior of the Virtus 420 Fly showcases several innovative features, beginning with a hydraulic swim platform that cleverly integrates steps rising from the port side as the platform lowers. These steps include a grab handle cut into the top step to facilitate boarding, and when raised, the steps sit flush with the teak surface. A reboarding ladder to starboard is complemented by removable grab handles for safety. The aft deck features double white bench seats arranged around a dual pedestal table, which can be adjusted along tracks fixed to the deck to maintain safety. Guests benefit from protection provided by the extended overhead of the flybridge deck. Access to the upper deck is via steep stairs with a unique design: one side of the steps is narrower, allowing for a natural ascent without risk of injury or tripping. The flybridge itself offers an excellent entertaining space with panoramic views, including a small galley equipped with an electric stove, covered sink, refrigerator, and storage. Seating includes a U-shaped settee with a flip teak pedestal table that slides to reveal drink holders and grab handles, expanding to a full-length dining table. A versatile bench seat converts into a chaise lounge or sun pad, all positioned to share the forward view alongside the operator.
Interior Living Spaces
On the main deck, the salon is designed for both climate control and open-air enjoyment, with sliding doors that can be closed or fully opened to blend indoor and outdoor spaces. The salon features L-shaped seating around a versatile table that can be lowered to form an additional berth for overnight guests. Innovative stools convert into chairs with storage underneath, enhancing functionality. To port, a cabinet conceals a pop-up television, an ice maker, a refrigerated drawer, and electronic components, leaving ample storage space. The galley continues the elegant veneer finish seen in the salon cabinetry and offers a generous counter prep area with covered double basin stainless steel sinks, an electric two-burner stove with pop-up fiddles, and open counter space. Appliances include refrigeration, a microwave, and a divided trash receptacle on a pull-out slider, reflecting German recycling habits. Storage is thoughtfully arranged behind the counter, at window level, and overhead. Notably, the galley boasts an unprecedented overhead clearance of 7 feet 7 inches, compared to 6 feet 8 inches in the salon, enhancing the sense of spaciousness.
Private Accommodations
Below deck, the Virtus 420 Fly comfortably accommodates three staterooms within its 44-foot 8-inch length. To starboard is a guest stateroom featuring dual berths that can convert into a single with filler cushions, complemented by a large hall-side window and an opening port light. Forward lies the master stateroom with an island berth flanked by hall-side windows on both port and starboard sides. The master includes a storage cabinet with a vanity under a soft-close lid, drawers beneath the berth, and an en suite head with a separate walk-in shower. A second guest cabin is located aft, also with dual berths convertible to a single, suitable for children or a hired captain. This cabin benefits from overhead geometry that maximizes space and an inboard bulkhead that provides shelf space. Adjacent to this cabin is the day head, which also features a walk-in shower. The companionway stairs lift to reveal ample storage and can be optionally equipped with a combination washer-dryer unit.
Conclusion
The Bavaria Virtus 420 Fly represents a well-built and meticulously engineered yacht that combines German precision with thoughtful modifications for the North American market. Its innovative features, spacious accommodations, and high-quality fit and finish make it a versatile and comfortable vessel suitable for a variety of cruising needs. The yacht's design emphasizes safety, convenience, and style, making it an exemplary choice for those seeking a refined boating experience.
