Broker's Comments

I have loved the Alerion 28 since I first saw one sailing in light air on the Chesapeake Bay. There were a few attractive day sailors with similar designs, but they all had full keels and were sluggish in light air which is common on the Chesapeake Bay. We are told that Nathanial Herreshoff’s original “Alerion” was designed and built for him to just go for a 2 hour sail on a day when he wanted to just escape from the daily routine and enjoy a good sail. “Orion" satisfies that desire. The keel and the balance of the helm lets the boat accelerate and turn on a dime. The helm is so well balanced, you don’t need an auto pilot and a shock cord around the tiller is often all you need to steer a straight course. From single handed to 4 people in the cockpit, with the Hoyt jib/boom the jib is self tacking and constantly holding it shape through a tack or gybe while also being on a roller furler make everything so easy to just launch and go for a sail then roll everything back up and put away. A reliable yanmar engine regularly serviced and a folding prop provide power to leave and return to the dock. Orion is simple. Almost all lines lead back to the cockpit. GPS, Multi-Gause, and compass are mounted on the bulkhead to guide the journey. Just a Main and a Jib (a seldom used Spinnaker comes with the boat). The back stay is adjustable. The teak is natural. The varnish is beautiful. The Vee berth forward cushions (and all cushions) are in good shape and relatively clean. There’s a hand pump for the sink. There’s a chart table and cooler (which also serves as a step) at the base of the companionway. A seat on Starboard with a small storage area behind the back of the seat and a short bunk on the port side. Teak and holly floor boars are in “Fair” condition. Engine access is fairly good for normal maintenance. The primary reason to buy the boat is how wonderful it is to sail. The helm is very well balances and the turning radius centers around the keel and is very close to her boat length (the rudder is big and mounted behind the keel close enough to spin the boat in a very tight circle).
