Carl Alberg designed boats to go to sea. Most of his designs are still out there sailing around the world, a testament to overall thought process that went into the term “world cruiser. "Silk Purse" is a true ready to go world cruiser. Purchased by its present owner in 2012, it went through a complete professional restoration which included but, not limited to: stripping the entire deck off all the hardware and wood, stripping the bottom and barrier coating, fairing and painting of the topside hull in rich royal blue with white stripes, painting of the deck and rebedding of all the hardware, all new brass portlights with screens, all exterior wood received 13 coats of marine varnish and a brand new full custom winter cover. A true yachtsman’s boat with comfort and safety in mind; "Silk Purse" is reluctantly offered for sale due to a family health issue and change in the owners plans. Located at our Buffalo, NY marina, well below replacement value, probably the nicest Alberg 37 on the current market;

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1967 Alberg 37 is a classic cruising sailboat known for its solid construction and timeless design. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Sturdy Construction: Built with a robust fiberglass hull and traditional full keel, the Alberg 37 offers excellent durability and stability in a variety of sea conditions.

Seaworthy Design: Its heavy displacement and full keel provide a smooth, comfortable ride and reliable tracking, making it well-suited for offshore passages.

Classic Aesthetics: The traditional lines, long overhangs, and beautiful sheer make the Alberg 37 a visually appealing boat with enduring charm.

Good Interior Layout: The interior typically features a practical and cozy arrangement with ample storage, a functional galley, and comfortable sleeping quarters for extended cruising.

Strong Community Support: Due to its popularity and longevity, there is a robust community of Alberg 37 owners and resources available for maintenance and upgrades.

Cons

Heavier and Slower: Compared to more modern designs, the Alberg 37's heavy displacement and full keel result in slower speeds and less agility, especially in light winds.

Limited Interior Space: While practical, the interior can feel cramped compared to contemporary cruising boats, with lower headroom and narrower cabins.

Maintenance Requirements: As a vintage boat, it may require more ongoing maintenance and occasional upgrades to systems and equipment to meet modern standards.

Outdated Sailing Hardware: Some original fittings and rigging may be outdated or less efficient, potentially necessitating replacement for optimal performance and safety.

Less Maneuverable: The full keel design, while excellent for tracking, can make tight maneuvering in marinas or crowded anchorages more challenging.
