Overview

The Albemarle 360 Express Fish is a well-established model in Albemarle's lineup, having been popular for approximately five years with incremental updates over time. The most significant recent enhancement is the integration of IPS (Inboard Performance System) drives in the latest model 11, which has become a highly sought-after feature. This review focuses on the Albemarle 360 Express equipped with twin IPS 600 drives, providing a comprehensive evaluation of its design, performance, and onboard amenities.

Helm and Exterior Design

The helm station of the Albemarle 360 Express is thoughtfully arranged for ease of operation and comfort. It features dual 12-inch displays, an IPS joystick, single-lever sportfish controls, and a Bubble Pentas Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) readout with a selector positioned conveniently above. Communication and navigation are supported by Garmin VHF and autopilot systems. The stainless steel steering wheel is mounted at an ergonomic 45-degree angle, enhancing operator comfort. Notably, Albemarle retains the Palm Beach controllers, a preferred choice among operators. The cockpit offers 78 square feet of space, including a stern fish door secured by a magnetic catch, avoiding interference with lines due to the absence of cleats on the cap rail. Forward in the cockpit, there is a rigging station equipped with a bait freezer, sink, and an aerated livewell with rounded corners. Access to the helm deck is via two nine-inch steps from the cockpit, where seating arrangements include a portside bench with storage (or optional helm air conditioning) and an aft L-shaped seating area with additional storage. It includes a stainless steel single basin sink, a single-burner electric stove, a microwave, and a refrigerated drawer, with easy access to electrical systems situated behind the helm panel. Opposite the galley is a spacious head compartment with a separate shower stall, providing privacy and comfort. The forward master stateroom is enclosed by privacy doors and contains a berth measuring approximately four feet three inches wide by six feet long. Surrounding the berth are storage shelves, and to starboard, there is dedicated rod storage for six fishing rods. To port, a comfortable ultra-leather settee accompanies a small table, which, while functional, could benefit from being larger or having fold-out leaves to better accommodate dining. The salon area also converts easily into additional sleeping accommodations with a fold-out bunk and an overhead cushion insert for extra berth space.

Power and Performance

Powered by twin IPS 600 drives, the Albemarle 360 Express demonstrates commendable performance characteristics. The test boat, with an estimated weight of 29,670 pounds including fuel, water, and four occupants, achieved a top speed of 32.1 knots at 3,500 RPM while consuming 43 gallons per hour, resulting in a fuel efficiency of approximately 0.75 nautical miles per gallon and a range of 359 nautical miles. The most efficient cruise was recorded at 3,000 RPM and 25.2 knots, burning 29 gallons per hour and extending the range to 419 nautical miles at 0.87 nautical miles per gallon. The turbocharged engines exhibit a slight lag before turbo spool-up, yet acceleration remains brisk with a time to plane of just under 6.2 seconds, 0 to 20 mph in 7.6 seconds, and surpassing 30 mph in 13.4 seconds. Handling is smooth and responsive with no dead spots in the power curve, and the IPS system provides excellent low-speed thrust, allowing an idle speed as low as 4.3 knots. Trolling valves further reduce the minimum speed to approximately 2.5 knots, producing clean, turbulence-free prop wash. During acceleration, a bow rise of about 16 degrees was observed, temporarily obscuring forward visibility for several seconds, warranting caution during rapid throttle increases. The power steering is highly responsive with no feedback, eliminating the need for a steering knob. Maneuverability is enhanced by the dynamic range of motion of the pods, enabling a 360-degree turn in 45 seconds at cruising speed and a return to below planing speed in 23 seconds. The boat handles light chop well, dispersing wake water widely with minimal spray reaching the windshield.
