Absolute Navetta 48: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Absolute Nevada 48 represents the smallest model in Absolute's cruising series, designed as a long-range cruiser with a focus on comfort and ease of handling. Measuring 49 feet 7 inches in length overall, with a beam of 15 feet 3 inches and a draft of 3 feet 5 inches, this vessel balances size and performance. Powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS600 diesel engines, each producing 435 horsepower, the Nevada 48 is engineered for both efficient cruising and precise maneuverability.

Helm and Bridge Design

The helm station of the Nevada 48 is thoughtfully designed to maximize visibility and operational control. Surrounded by expansive glass, the central windshield spans nine feet wide and over two feet high, providing excellent sightlines whether standing or seated. The helm features a double-wide adjustable seat with a bolster for comfort during extended periods at the controls. The instrument panel is clean and spacious, accommodating two 15-inch navigation screens on a carbon fiber dash. Controls are logically arranged, including engine ignitions, windlass remote, Bennett trim tabs, and Volvo Penta engine controls with joystick integration. Air conditioning vents flank the panel, and a conveniently located power panel under an acrylic cover allows quick system status checks. A pantograph-style door adjacent to the helm permits easy access to the side deck for docking operations, complemented by an electrically actuated window to enhance ventilation and communication.

Flybridge and Upper Helm

The flybridge helm is positioned further aft than the lower station and includes an adjustable acrylic wind deflector to shield the captain from wind. Dual navigation screens and engine diagnostics are integrated into the console, with controls such as the engine binnacle and joystick placed to the right. The captain's chair is mounted on a single pedestal with flip-up armrests, while companion seating faces inward on both port and starboard sides, creating a social and functional space for navigation and observation.

Engine Room and Mechanical Layout

Accessed via a hatch on the aft deck, the engine room is compact yet efficiently arranged. It houses twin 435 horsepower Volvo Penta diesel engines spaced widely apart, flanking a 21.5 kW generator. Key maintenance points such as raw water strainers, oil dipsticks, and fuel filters are easily accessible at the foot of the ladder. The vessel carries two interconnected fuel tanks with a combined capacity of 476 gallons, monitored by a single sight gauge. Centrally located between the tanks is a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, enhancing onboard comfort by reducing roll. The IPS pods are directly connected to the engines, with exhaust routed underwater behind the forward-facing propellers. Heavy-duty hardware, including Glen Denning Cablemaster holders and robust double-horned bollards, underscores the boat’s capability for serious cruising.

Deck and Exterior Features

The Nevada 48’s exterior design emphasizes safety and functionality. Wide 17-inch side decks with 34-inch high handrails and hardtop protection provide secure movement around the vessel. Teak deck hatches conceal fuel filler ports, and strategically placed double-horned bollards facilitate mooring. The foredeck is enclosed by a stainless steel tow rail and handrails, featuring heavy-duty bollards, an ultra anchor mounted on a stainless steel bow roller, and an extended scuff plate with an integrated anchor washdown sprayer. The vertical windlass system feeds chain into the locker, with remote and manual backup controls positioned for easy access.

Performance and Handling

During sea trials, the Nevada 48 demonstrated responsive and precise handling, largely attributed to the Volvo Penta IPS joystick system. The boat’s displacement of approximately 39,300 pounds, combined with fuel, water, and test equipment, resulted in a test weight near 41,785 pounds. The vessel achieved a top speed of 26.7 knots at 3550 RPM in moderate sea conditions. Optimal fuel economy was recorded at 18.7 knots and 3000 RPM, with a consumption rate of 29.5 gallons per hour, translating to a range of 272 nautical miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. The boat’s sharp bow entry and narrow forefoot contribute to a smooth ride through light rollers and choppy seas, with spray effectively deflected away from the flybridge. At displacement speeds around 7 knots, the Nevada 48 offers an extended range of approximately 600 nautical miles. While the IPS system results in a wider turning radius at speed, reduced speeds allow for sharper maneuvering, facilitating docking and close-quarters handling.

Docking and Maneuverability

The combination of the joystick control and practical design features such as the pantograph door and side deck access greatly simplify docking procedures. The captain can step outside to gain clear sightlines along the vessel’s side, enhancing safety and confidence when backing into tight slips. This ease of handling makes the Nevada 48 well suited for owner-operators who value both comfort and control.

Conclusion

The Absolute Nevada 48 delivers a compelling blend of performance, comfort, and user-friendly operation. Its well-conceived helm stations, robust mechanical systems, and thoughtful deck layout support both extended cruising and precise maneuvering. The vessel’s ride quality and fuel efficiency further enhance its appeal as a capable and comfortable long-range cruiser. Overall, the Nevada 48 stands out as an ideal choice for owners seeking a manageable yet well-equipped cruising yacht.
