One of two steel custom schooners built by the highly regarded Peacock Boat Co. in Wilmington, CA to a William Crealock design, Shellback is a magnificent cruising platform the likes of which one rarely sees. Designed by William Crealock (who's penned literally hundreds of renowned cruisers over the years) as a supremely capable long-distance cruiser, this vessel means BUSINESS! A veteran of passages to Hawaii, Mexico, French Polynesia, New Zealand, and thru the Panama Canal to the Caribbeean, she's now lying in Tiburon, CA awaiting new owners and further adventures.
William Crealock is best known for his fiberglass production sailboats (like the Westsail 32, the Pacific Seacraft 34 and 37, all the Cabo Ricos, etc) but his real passion was for larger custom heavy-displacement steel vessels designed for serious ocean voyaging and he was a MASTER at it. His design philosophy was that a boat must first take care of her crew, and his designs are both seaworthy and seakindly--he famously aimed to create boats that could be handled by "an emaciated skipper and a mildly mutinous spouse."
The keel was laid and hull built (reportedly of nickel steel, which is stronger, lighter, and much more corrosion resistant than mild steel) in the late 1980s by the Peacock Boat Co, best known for their rugged no-nonsense steel fishing boats and finished out in situ there by the original owner and first launched in 1997. Not surprising given both her designer and builder, Shellback is a workmanlike vessel that will take her crew safely and comfortably wherever in the world they want to go.
Powered by a 115 hp Cummins naturally aspirated diesel engine, she surveyed out well in June, 2025 and a copy of this survey can be made available to interested parties.
