Boat Features

Malibu wake surf boats are inboard towboats built to shape a rideable wave on demand, and the M230 sits at the top of the current lineup. It measures 23 feet long with a 102-inch beam, carries a 74-gallon fuel tank, seats up to 16 people, and has a dry weight of 6,750 pounds. With 4,100 pounds of ballast on board, it is a true family wakesurf boat meant to handle surfing, wakeboarding, foiling and cruising in one hull. A surf wave at full ballast holds a long, open pocket with a barreling section far back from the transom.

The wave comes from three systems working together. Surf Gate Fusion, integrated into the hull rather than hung off the back, deflects water to either side and switches sides quickly when you tap surf left or right. The Power Wedge mounts at the transom and pulls the boat deeper into the water or lifts it higher, with settings that run from one through five plus a stowed position. On the M230 a setting of three at roughly 11.6 mph with full ballast produced a tall wave that still kept length. The boat fills six ballast tanks through 12 dedicated pumps, with weight-shift control to balance the load side to side. User profiles set the speed automatically: beginner wakeboard runs 18 mph with no ballast for a clean, forgiving ramp, while intermediate adds about 50 percent of the stern weight.

The helm uses a long, low-mounted touchscreen with a rotary command dial and an eight-way rotary sport dial for changing speed, volume, wave side and wedge without taking a hand off the wheel. A surf band wristband gives the rider control of speed, volume, surf side and wedge number from the water. The camera package includes bow, stern and a high-resolution 360-degree system with two cameras per side that can record video and stills. A stern turn control runs the thruster for tight, low-speed maneuvering and 360-degree spins, even with the engine off.

The cockpit is built for long days. The power-adjustable helm seat moves up, down, fore and aft with a bolster and three presets, plus a heated seat and heated steering wheel. The bow has non-skid surfaces all around, six cup holders, wireless phone chargers, USB, USB-C and 12-volt outlets, and ballast tanks under the three seat bases. Hidden features include the pop-out Natalie backrest seat, a stowable air dam for closing off the bow, sundeck and tower misters fed by a freshwater tank, and Raise and Laze cockpit storage.

Used Malibu surf boats for sale span several hulls worth knowing. The 22 VLX produces a long, friendly wave around 10.8 mph with the wedge at one and surf gate deployed, suiting beginners through advanced riders. The 23 LSV builds a high-volume pocket at about 11 mph with the wedge at three for carving and airs. The 22 MXZ, a slightly smaller sibling of the 24 MXC, throws a large wakeboard wake with a vertical lip when run near 23 mph with full ballast and the wedge at one.
