Boat Features

The Cobalt R6 Surf is a reverse-drive surf boat just shy of 26 feet, built as a crossover for families who want a true wave behind the boat plus the ride of a deep-V bowrider. Because Cobalt is a Malibu-owned brand, the R6 Surf pairs Cobalt fit and finish with surf hardware Malibu pioneered. The high freeboard and deep hull let it handle three- and four-foot chop on big water that would punish a traditional inboard, while still producing a clean surf wave once the ballast is filled. It is rated for 14 people, and there is genuine seating for that number across a cockpit that feels closer to a 28- or 29-foot boat.

Power comes from a Volvo Penta V8 rated at 380 horsepower, closed-cooled and mated to the patented forward-facing Volvo drive built specifically for Cobalt. The props sit well forward of the transom, a safety feature that keeps a surfer away from the drive. The wave is shaped by three elements working together: the forward drive, Malibu's patented Surf Gate, and trim tabs for fine-tuning. Ballast is hard-tank rather than the bladder bags most competitors use in this style of boat, with three tanks (port forward, starboard, and bow) adding roughly 2,450 pounds to the boat's approximate 6,100-pound hull weight, all filled by the press of a button. An optional quick-drain system drains the heat exchanger so the boat can be used into colder months once the ballast is winterized.

At the helm, the dash runs on Garmin glass displays — twin nine-inch screens on earlier hulls, upgraded to Garmin 8610 units with faster processors. The screens are customizable, work independently, and handle the surf system, navigation, depth, and engine readouts. Surf controls fill the tanks, set Surf Left or Surf Right, and use a zero-off speed control that locks in cruise to the tenth of a mile per hour. Audio is Harman Kardon, available with the Prisma electric folding arch carrying four tower speakers, transom speakers, and two subwoofers, plus JL Audio options. A wireless phone charger, tilt wheel, windlass anchor controls, and heat are grouped at the helm, and an electric helm seat is offered.

The transom carries a flip-down swim step that drops below the water as a ladder, a transom stereo remote, and a heavy-duty grab handle. A flip-down lounge converts to a full sun pad, and the aft cockpit backrest flips forward into a chaise or rearward into an aft-facing lounge for watching riders. The arch tilts and adds swivel board racks on hydraulic arms; a rotating sun shade is a popular surf-model option. Storage runs throughout — a built-in cooler behind the driver, a dropped-in cooler to starboard, an in-floor locker on gas struts, plus the onboard water tank and holding tank under access panels.

Inside, the R6 Surf carries a full head compartment unusual for a surf boat, with a porcelain electric-flush head or porta-potty, solid-surface countertops, seagrass flooring, and a lockable glove box, usable as a closet or storage. The bow is deep and roomy with USB outlets to each side, flip-down armrests, and abundant storage under the seats, one section usable as a cooler. The caramel carbon interior is a popular combination, with double-stitched, multi-density upholstery sewn in-house and a Beehive accent package with LED lighting throughout. The squared-off Sport windshield adds interior volume, and engine access is wide and gasket-sealed for quiet running. Examples are packaged on a tandem-axle Heritage custom trailer.
