The Cobalt R4 Surf is the surf variant of Cobalt's smallest R-series model, a 24-foot 3-inch wake boat built around a forward-facing Volvo Penta drive rather than a V-drive. It shares the styling and luxury fit and finish of the standard R4 while adding the ballast, wave-shaping and tower hardware needed for surfing, making it suited to families who want one boat that can throw a serious wave, pull skiers and tubers, and still cruise comfortably on smaller lakes. The 2026 model is offered in new colors, including a deep teal hull carried onto the interior surfaces rather than the usual white.

Power comes from the Volvo Penta 350 forward drive, a setup with dual props that bite harder and let the boat back down and steer in reverse without needing a bow thruster. The R4 Surf will run upward of nearly 50 mph, and its steep dead rise cuts through chop while adding interior volume and storage depth. Wave shaping uses the patented Surf Gate system together with three ballast zones — one forward center tank plus port and starboard rear tanks — adding roughly 1,200 pounds of weight. Trimming the outdrive sinks the stern further to divert more water, and integrated GPS speed control, surf-left and surf-right functions, and performance mode round out the next-generation surf system.

The helm centers on twin Garmin glass-cockpit screens, available in 8-inch standard or 10-inch optional sizing, running navigation on one side and engine and surf data on the other. Surf controls, ballast management for all three zones, and saveable rider profiles are handled on screen. The Gussi Italiana steering wheel, illuminated sealed switches, a Fusion head unit, a JL Audio system with subwoofer, a wireless phone charger and a heater for extending the season are all within reach of the fly-by-wire side knob throttle. A surf camera and PTM rear-view mirror let the captain watch riders behind the boat.

On deck, the E2 power tower folds at the push of a button and carries a rotating sunshade plus integrated, welded surfboard racks; Roswell Elite racks are standard, with PTM Edge clamping racks and Roswell Triton racks optional. The swim platform features a manual drop step with surf badging, an optional powered E-step, and an optional rumble seat, while drop-down cleats keep ropes from tangling. The cockpit uses a three-position backrest system for forward-facing, rear-facing and lounge seating, and the bow seats five with grab rails and drink holders throughout.

Inside, the caramel carbon interior package is one of four schemes alongside cocoa summit, frost summit and frost slate, upholstered in Fresco Chill vinyl that runs about 15 degrees cooler than other marine vinyls. Storage is a standout: lockers under both bow flip seats, an in-floor lockable compartment, a deep ski locker, a built-in insulated ice chest and a bench storage area housing the trash can, fire extinguisher and electrical panel. There is no head, a trade Cobalt makes for added cockpit space.
