Boat Features

The Cobalt CS23 Surf is the surf-capable variant of Cobalt's next-generation CS23, a 23-foot, easily trailerable sterndrive built to bring full Cobalt fit and finish into a more attainable package than the larger R series. Length overall is 23 feet 5 inches with a full beam of 8 feet 6 inches, and the surf model carries 1,244 pounds of ballast capacity fed by a subfloor hard-tank ballast system introduced for 2024. It suits a buyer who wants to surf and wakeboard at a high level without giving up the ride and interior of a premium runabout, including first-time Cobalt owners stepping up from a value-priced boat.

Power comes from Volvo Penta forward-facing drives, with a 280-horsepower V6 and a 300-horsepower option, both running dual-prop drives for extra torque and tight, predictable handling when backing or maneuvering. Top speed reaches close to 50 mph. The deep-V hull with multiple strakes cuts through light chop, and Cobalt lowered the cockpit floor so the interior stays deep despite the moderate freeboard. The wave is generated by a Malibu-patented Surf Gate integrated into the transom rather than external tabs, with starter surf profiles set for steep or mellow waves and the ability to switch from surf-left to surf-right on the fly. A 60-gallon fuel tank is the published figure for the standard CS23.

The redesigned helm uses two Garmin 7-inch touchscreens, one in the center and a second in the lower right panel dedicated to surf functions, with speed control and ballast managed on the Garmin display and drive trim handled at the side control. Surf profiles can be saved per rider. The dash is fully upholstered with hand-stitched leather and a tilt steering wheel, and the obsidian windshield pairs slightly curved glass and black framework with Cobalt's solid stainless steel windshield braces. Helm options include a wireless phone charger or phone cradle, a 12-volt air pump source, and XM Weather through the Garmin displays.

At the stern, the continuous rub rail creates a shoebox deck-to-hull fit that yields a full-beam integrated swim platform with Cobalt's flip-down step and a transom cushion for leaning back with feet in the water. The aft walk-through has deep storage whether or not the optional full-width filler cushion is fitted, the port side holds a cooler and trash receptacle, and an optional rumble or jump seat lets you sit further back to watch riders. The cockpit offers U-lounge seating rated for 12 persons, a port-side observer seat with forward- and aft-facing backrest positions, 16 stainless steel drink holders, and multiple USB-A, USB-C and 12-volt ports. The bow is large for a 23-footer, with stainless cup holders and handrails, a removable bow cushion, one-piece flip-up seats over deep storage, a forward anchor locker, and a pin-in wind block door.

Interior color selections are summit/frost, frost/slate, caramel and summit/cocoa, with the darker fresco chill vinyls running about 15 degrees cooler to the touch in the sun. Flooring is offered as snap-out seagrass mats with non-skid fiberglass underneath or permanent-mount Sof-Trac, with high-density glued-down marine mat used on recent surf boats. Surf standard equipment includes a Zenith aluminum folding arch in wider black with Roswell brushed aluminum board racks and clamp-on tow balls, with upgrades to Roswell T2, PTM generation 3 or Triton 2 swivel racks, plus RGB lighting. Audio ranges from a six-speaker standard package up to a 1,800-watt premium system or the Harman Kardon platinum package with up to 2,400 watts and a pair of 8-inch tower speakers at 300 watts each. The CS23 Surf can be personalized across the forward hull side, aft hull side, boot stripe and hull bottom, plus a surf-gate accent, from 12 gelcoat colors.
