The Beneteau Oceanis 40.1 is a 12-meter cruising sailboat that replaced the Oceanis 41, with naval architecture by Marc Lombard and interior design by Nauta Design. Its defining feature is a double-chine hull that runs from bow to stern, paired with a scow-influenced tulip bow where the waterline narrows low and flares out above to create volume in the forward cabin. The chine diverts spray for a drier deck and gives the interior the feel of a 45-footer in a 40-foot package. The boat suits owners who want easy short-handed day sailing as well as charter operators, which is why used and new Beneteau Oceanis 40.1 boats for sale appear in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 model years.
Performance comes from a Yanmar 45-horsepower shaft-driven diesel, which cruises at seven to eight knots at 2,200 rpm. Under sail in around 10 knots of true wind, the 40.1 makes about 6.5 knots over ground while generating 13 knots of apparent wind. Twin wheels control twin rudders set wide apart and angled so the leeward blade stands nearly vertical when heeled, producing little weather helm and a balanced, self-steering feel. A retractable bow thruster, electric windlass with a chain counter, and a delta anchor handle close maneuvering and ground tackle.
The sail plan starts with a standard roller-furling mainsail and self-tacking jib, with upwind and downwind packs adding a full-furling genoa on adjustable track cars, a bowsprit and code zero rigging. The previous roll bar is gone, with the mainsheet led to the coachroof to clear the cockpit and allow full-batten sails. Mast options are a 60-foot-2-inch standard rig and a 61-foot-7-inch performance rig, both ICW-friendly, over a shallow keel of 5 feet 6 inches, a deep keel of 7 feet 1 inch, or a 7-foot-5-inch performance draft. A performance pack adds a flat-deck genoa furler, cascading backstay, Dyneema running rigging, Harken blocks and performance sails.
The cockpit holds a deluxe table seating six to eight with an integrated life raft, folding helm seats, and bench seating just under six feet long. An electric transom drops to reveal a roughly three-square-meter swim platform with a folding ladder and intermediate step. At the starboard primary helm sit a Raymarine or B&G chart plotter, autopilot, throttle, bow thruster and windlass controls; B&G coastal and offshore electronics packs add depth, wind and a second Zeus screen at the port helm. A Schenker-style panel monitors battery health, with an inverter, USB charging, Fusion stereo and optional air conditioning.
Below deck the layout ranges from a two-cabin, one-head owner's version with a cockpit-accessed workshop to three- or four-cabin charter versions with two heads, the four-cabin adding a forward bunk cabin. Interior wood comes in alpi walnut or lighter white oak over oak flooring. The galley is a C- or U-shape with a two-burner stove and oven, twin sinks with a cutting board, and a refrigerator offering a 50-gallon top- and front-loading box plus a 3-gallon freezer. The forward master has a centerline berth, two hanging lockers, and an optional vanity sink or additional head.
