Boat Features

The Beneteau First 36 is a performance cruiser-racer designed through a collaboration between Beneteau and the Slovenian sportsboat builder Seascape, with naval architecture by Sam Manuard and interior work by Lorenzo Argento, alongside Kigo Design and Pure Engineering. It replaces the legendary Beneteau First 36.7, of which around 800 were built, and carries the same crossover brief: a boat fast enough to race, comfortable enough to cruise, and approachable enough to sail shorthanded. Measuring 11.98m overall with a 3.80m beam, it is built to RCD Category A for offshore use, with a minimum crew capacity of six and a maximum of ten. Early demand was strong, with 50 boats sold before the first sailing season was complete.

Performance is the heart of the boat. The hull is engineered to plane in roughly 12 knots of wind, and it will start planing at around 9 to 9.5 knots of boat speed, with double-figure speeds achievable in 12 to 13 knots. Even in 8 to 10 knots it sits comfortably around 8 knots, and it carries a Code Zero well in very light air. Much of this comes from the light-ship displacement of about 4.7 to 4.8 tonnes, achieved with a fully cored, vacuum-infused vinylester hull and deck using Corecell foam, built like a race boat with no internal grid liners or wooden structural members. Auxiliary power is a 30hp Yanmar diesel on a sail drive as standard.

The cockpit is large for the length, feeling closer to a 40-foot race boat, with twin wheels, six winches and Harken Performa hardware. The helm positions are worked out so a sailor can sit aft of the wheel with full crew, central to reach the mainsheet, or forward of it when shorthanded, with a sturdy handhold for moving around. Floating leads allow fine adjustment of the genoa trim, and removable lazarettes let the cockpit switch between race mode and a cruising setup with a central table. The standard rig is an aluminum mast with a carbon fiber option, and a GRP bowsprit with an internal stainless structure for the anchor roller is available. At the starboard helm sits a Garmin MFD with throttle control alongside.

Below decks, the First 36 comes in a single three-cabin, one-head layout, with a proper forward-facing nav station that the designers refused to give up. The interior takes cues from the larger First Yacht 53, using warm wood with white accents, curved fiddles and solid wooden rails; around 300kg of timber goes into the joinery. A standout feature is the central galley island that doubles as a double-height fridge and a bracing point underway, with a Corian-topped galley, stainless steel sink, soft-close drawers and a gimballed two-burner stove and oven. The two aft cabins each convert between single and double via a sliding bed board, and can be used as stowage for sails or cruising gear. Headroom is around six feet in the aft cabins and over 1.85m at the heads, which uses a fold-down sink and pull-out shower to save space, while the forward V-berth is spacious with shelves and large storage beneath.

For buyers focused on racing, the Beneteau First 36 SE (Seascape Edition) is optimized for ORC rating and weighs about 4.3 tonnes, roughly 500kg lighter than the standard boat. It swaps the twin wheels for a classic tiller with the mainsheet and primary winches placed for ergonomic shorthanded trimming, and uses a carbon rig, a shallower keel and a reshaped, slightly cut-back bow that shortens the static waterline. Inside, the layout is identical but the finish is stripped for weight, with carbon fiber fiddles, lightweight GRP floorboards and table, magnetic doors and no wooden liners, while keeping the galley, head, cabins and fridge. The deck uses non-skid technical foam in place of standard gelcoat. A standard First 36 has been offered for sale at around £300,000 including taxes. When weighing one up, the compact single head is the main compromise of the generous saloon and nav station, and committed racers can strip further weight from the well-equipped standard build.
