Boat Features

The Azimut Magellano is a range of long-distance cruisers built around a semi-planing dual-mode hull, a modern interpretation of the classic trawler aimed at owners who want comfort, low fuel consumption and the freedom to reach distant destinations. The line spans from the Magellano 43 up through the 53, 60 and 66 to the 30 metri flagship just shy of 100 feet, with exterior design work by Ken Freivokh and a focus on voluminous, liveaboard-friendly interiors. The name honors the Portuguese explorer Magellan, and the boats are pitched equally at first-time motorboat owners moving over from sail and experienced cruisers wanting an easier, more stable platform as they get older.

The Azimut Magellano 43 measures 13.63 meters and uses a hull designed by Bill Dixon, with twin 355hp Cummins diesels (350hp units are also available) driving both a displacement mode and a planing mode. Its efficiency band runs between 10 and 20 knots; 15 knots at 2,120 rpm burns about 80 liters per hour for a range beyond 300 nautical miles from 1,600 liters, while a steady 8 knots stretches that to roughly 800 miles. Top speed is over 23 knots, and the boat runs at just 62 decibels at displacement pace. Below deck are three cabins, a master with private bathroom, a twin that converts to a king, and a single, finished in walnut. A hardtop version adds four overhead saloon windows, two of which open, and a folding mast that drops air draft to 3.5 meters for passing under fixed bridges.

The Magellano 60 is the smallest in the current range, powered by twin MAN i6 730hp engines through shaft drives paired with a proportional side-power bow thruster and standard joystick control. It cruises comfortably between 18 and 24 knots, drops to 8 to 10 knots in displacement mode, and reached nearly 30 knots downwind in heavy seas. Fuel capacity is 3,650 liters, giving about 350 nautical miles at 15 knots, with the semi-planing hull actually running a touch more efficiently at 18 to 20 knots. A hydraulic bathing platform rated to 500kg carries a tender up to 3.3 meters, and a Seakeeper is available.

The Azimut Magellano 66 is 20.15 meters with a displacement between 37.5 and 44.5 tonnes. With twin MAN 850hp engines it tops out around 24 knots, and pulling back to a fast cruise of 19 knots returns 500 nautical miles of range. An alternative Volvo Penta D13 800hp installation on V-drive shafts burns 40 liters per hour at 10 knots and 20 liters per hour at 8 knots, drawing on a 4,500-liter tank for up to 1,800 miles. The full-beam owner's cabin sits amidships with twin hanging lockers and hull-side windows; standard layout is three cabins, with a fourth bunk cabin or a utility room/study available. Raymarine displays sit at the lower helm, and the flybridge can be ordered open or with a hardtop and sunroof.

The Magellano 30 metri is the largest model, with five cabins, a tender garage that doubles as the bathing platform housing a Williams tender and jet ski, twin wing helm stations, a foredeck hot tub and a 12-person flybridge dining table. It runs shaft drives with joystick control, triple Simrad displays with full digital switching, and reaches about 25 knots with the 1,900hp engine option. Across the Magellano range, the high coamings, deep side decks and substantial deck gear back up the long-range cruising brief, points worth weighing against engine choice and layout when comparing boats for sale.
