VX Cruiser Details

The Yamaha VX Series is the boating industry's all-time best-selling personal watercraft; renowned for delivering more comfort, more stability, better performance and more excitement than competitive entry-level models. This venerable watercraft line gets its first complete rework in a decade; elevating the VX, VX Deluxe, and VX Cruiser models upmarket with features and technologies never before seen on a value priced watercraft. And the high performance VXR and VXS also see a platform redesign with a feature rich package.

The VX Series features a hull and deck design that takes styling cues from Yamaha's flagship FX® Series. The striking new deck with masculine hard-edged lines now includes integrated mirrors, refined cockpit ergonomics, a two-piece seat design and a larger stern platform.

Advanced Throttle Control Features

On the handlebars, the VX Deluxe and VX Cruiser now include Yamaha’s premium Cruise Assist for setting and holding a consistent speed, No Wake Mode to set the engine’s RPMs at a perfect no wake speed; and RiDE, Yamaha’s dual handlebar throttle controls that deliver the utmost control moving forward or in reverse.

RiDE could not be more intuitive. The right handlebar lever is forward. The left is reverse. At speed, the left handlebar lever will also slow you down. Release both right and left levers and the watercraft is in neutral. No shifting. No gears. The only thing to think about is how much fun it is to RiDE.

New Hull, Superior Handling

Under the water line is one of the best handling hulls Yamaha has ever designed. Featuring modified hull strakes, softer bow chines, and a new keel shape; this new lightweight NanoXcel® hull delivers excellent stability for three-up riding and towing, and precise responsiveness and predictability for thrilling one-up riding. There is not another hull in the value category that offers as much fun and excitement.

VX High-Performance Models

The two-person VXR and three-person VXS are the high-performance models in the VX line, known best as the only normally-aspirated powered watercraft today that accelerates quicker than other brand’s supercharged offerings. If that’s not enough, it has dominated the IJSBA pro watercraft national circuit, taking home championship wins fours years in a row since it was first introduced.

The NanoXcel hull design works exceptionally well with the higher displacement 1.8L Yamaha marine engine that powers the VXR and VXS. Together, this combo makes the VXR and VXS more potent on the closed course than ever while maintaining its standing as the most affordable high-performance models today.

Like the rest of the VX line, the VXR and VXS are equipped with RiDE. Unlike the other models, the VXR and VXS come with five-position electronic trim to adjust the handling characteristics of the watercraft on the fly. Electronic trim is a new feature for Yamaha WaveRunner® personal watercraft.

Yamaha VX Cruiser: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Yamaha VX Cruiser represents a completely new design in Yamaha's lineup, featuring a redesigned hull, deck, and liner. This three-rider watercraft is engineered to deliver ride comfort, advanced features, and powerful performance typical of a premium model, while maintaining an accessible price point. The VX Cruiser incorporates innovative technology such as the Ride system, enhancing maneuverability and control.

Exterior Design and Rider Position

The VX Cruiser's seating arrangement is thoughtfully designed to accommodate three riders comfortably. The driver's seat offers excellent support and grip, with ample room for two additional passengers. A bolster at the rear provides secure support for a third rider, who can sit facing forward or aft. Well-positioned handholds serve both rider positions effectively, ensuring safety and comfort. The aft deck is spacious and covered with hydro-turf decking, providing superior traction and comfort for bare feet during water activities. Storage solutions include a compartment under the rear seat with a removable watertight container for dry storage, a quick-access box beneath the handlebars ideal for small items, and a large forward storage compartment capable of holding multiple personal flotation devices, towels, and other essentials. The fuel cap is conveniently accessible on the deck.

Control Systems and Technology

The VX Cruiser introduces a new digital control system on the left-hand side, featuring a ride throttle that enables seamless transitions between reverse, neutral, and forward with progressive deceleration. This system allows instantaneous switching between forward and reverse without lag or shifting, enhancing maneuverability in tight spaces like marinas. The Boat Control Unit (BCU) responds to handlebar movements during deceleration, providing regulated thrust for precise directional control. The helm is equipped with a digital dash featuring a multifunction display, complemented by wide-view mirrors on both sides for improved visibility. Ergonomic grips enhance rider comfort compared to traditional round grips. Additional features include Cruise Assist, which maintains a set speed above 3,000 RPM with adjustable thumb controls, and a no-wake mode that limits speed to approximately five miles per hour without throttle input. Yamaha's security system uses a fob to lock and unlock the ignition remotely and includes a low-mode setting that restricts engine RPM for less experienced riders.

Power and Performance

At the core of the VX Cruiser is Yamaha's reliable 1052cc four-cylinder fuel-injected marine engine paired with a 155-millimeter jet pump. The watercraft is constructed using Yamaha's Nano XL, an advanced sheet-molded composite material that offers high strength and reduced weight through an ultra-strong molecular structure. Measuring 131.9 inches in length overall, with a 48-inch beam and standing 46.9 inches from keel to handlebar, the VX Cruiser has a dry weight of 730 pounds and carries 18.5 gallons of fuel. Performance testing demonstrated the VX Cruiser's ample power and excellent handling characteristics, with stable and solid ride dynamics. The ride system contributes to exceptional maneuverability and nimbleness, aided by a reverse bucket design that allows quick and accurate directional control. The watercraft achieved an average top speed of 53.1 miles per hour at 8,000 RPM while consuming 7.4 gallons per hour. Acceleration from 0 to 30 miles per hour was recorded at 2.3 seconds, underscoring its responsive performance.

Conclusion

The Yamaha VX Cruiser successfully balances ride comfort, advanced features, and powerful performance in a watercraft that remains affordable. Its innovative control systems, thoughtful design, and reliable engine make it a compelling choice for riders seeking a premium experience without a premium price. The VX Cruiser's exceptional maneuverability, stability, and user-friendly technology position it as a versatile and enjoyable watercraft for a variety of riders.
