Featuring the largest boat platform ever offered by Yamaha, the 24-foot, 11-person, 240 Series provides more space in the areas customers want it most at a value that cannot be matched. For 2012, the Yamaha 240 Series includes the SX240 and the AR240. The AR240 is the watersports edition of the series that includes a new premium, fold-down aluminum watersports tower.

Above the waterline, the tall freeboard of the 240 Series gives the SX240 and AR240 an impressive profile. The seating area at the bow is wide and long allowing the tallest passengers and multiple riders the space to stretch out and lounge while moored. Insert the standard bow filler cushion and you have one of the largest, most comfortable bow seating configurations available in its class.

Exclusive to Yamaha boats is the industry’s first and only “rumble seat” design, a fun and innovative seating option that allows riders in the bow to enjoy a unique, front facing point-of-view in the forward-most part of the bow when underway. Completing the bow is premium marine-grade upholstery, multi-function filler cushion, handrails, four cupholders, a bow ladder, and anchor locker. The cockpit of the 240 Series is roomy and easy to navigate with a full crew on board.

The helm layout is minimalist and sporty with large analog gauges and integrated digital information displays that provide independently controlled access to a wide range of new information.

Utilizing an integrated GPS-based information control center, the digital displays can provide latitude, longitude, compass heading, elevation, water depth, trip odometer, clock, engine hours, engine speed, vessel voltage, vessel speed, highest speed, fuel level, fuel used and they are the first in their class to provide real time (gallons per hour and miles per gallon) fuel flow data.

Also at the helm are Yamaha’s exclusive Cruise Assist™ and No Wake Mode™.  The Cruise Assist feature can be engaged at planing speeds. When engaged, Cruise Assist will hold the engines at a specific RPM for effortless cruising or towing and can be increased eight positions up and eight positions down at pre-set increments (125 – 188 rpm depending on current engine speed).

The No Wake Mode includes three different RPM settings allowing the driver to easily increase or decrease their no wake speed to find the optimum setting. Also included in the cockpit are a fully enclosed, head compartment, multiple storage areas for gear, a dinette table side-mount design, and a large removable cooler that stores under the passenger seat.

The two-tier stern lounge area and swim platform of the 240 Series is wide, comfortable, and low to the water, which makes reboarding even easier and hanging out at the stern with family and friends more fun. Completing the stern area is a dinette table side-mount design, a rear stereo remote, hydro-turf deck mats, integrated cup holders, and a reboarding ladder that extends deep into the water for effortless reboarding.

Yamaha’s Signature Drive Train and Engine Package
Under the waterline is Yamaha’s dual internal drive propulsion system that delivers better performance and more peace of mind than traditional stern drive models.

Yamaha’s ultra-responsive internal drive system brings the 240 Series on plane faster and accelerates quicker than comparable boats. The 240’s shallow draft and enclosed impellers increase the boat’s versatility, allowing you to travel to places not accessible to stern drive boats. Yamaha Boats also feature pump clean out ports that are easily accessible from the swim platform, allowing boat owners to effortlessly clean out any debris without getting in the water or having to reach under the boat. Additionally, the low maintenance of Yamaha Boats makes them always ready to launch, all season long.

Class-Leading Engine Performance
Yamaha 24-foot boats are powered by two of Yamaha’s 1812cc four-stroke Yamaha Marine engines. These engines deliver industry-leading 0-30 MPH acceleration and greater top speed performance than comparable stern drive models.

Also new for Yamaha in 2012 is a thrust directional enhancer that maximizes control and maneuverability. This new design directs the water flow at an optimum angle, creating more responsive handling as the boat is turned right and left at slow speeds.

Standard features:
    •    Wide, long bow area with rumble seat backrests and multi-function bow filler cushion.
    •    Twin Yamaha High Output marine engines that deliver class-leading performance, reliability, and durability.
    •    Yamaha’s exclusive three-position No Wake Mode™ that allows the driver to set the engines at optimum no wake speed with the simple push of a button.
    •    Innovative stern lounge area with table mount, and stereo remote.
    •    Full-featured helm with fly by wire, fuel flow meter and GPS controlled instrumentation.
    •    A four speaker, premium stereo system with MP3 jack and direct iPod connectivity.
    •    Cruise Assist™, Yamaha’s exclusive feature that allows the driver to hold engine speed constant, ideal for long range rides and for maintaining a consistent speed while towing.

    •    Bimini Top

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Yamaha SX240 is a 23-foot 6-inch recreational boat designed for versatile performance and comfortable cruising. With a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a shallow draft of only 16 inches, this vessel weighs 3,298 pounds dry and carries up to 50.2 gallons of fuel. It is powered by twin high-output 1812cc Yamaha 4-cylinder, 4-stroke marine engines, delivering a blend of speed, efficiency, and maneuverability.

Power and Performance

During testing, the Yamaha SX240 achieved a top speed of 51.4 miles per hour at 7,550 RPM, consuming 23.2 gallons per hour and yielding 2.2 miles per gallon, which translates to a range of approximately 100 miles. For cruising, two optimal settings were identified: at 6,000 RPM, the boat runs at 37.4 miles per hour with a fuel burn of 11.5 gallons per hour, prioritizing speed; at 5,550 RPM, it cruises at 31.7 miles per hour while consuming 9.8 gallons per hour, favoring fuel economy. Both settings provide an efficient 3.2 miles per gallon and an extended range of 147 miles. The SX240 planes quickly, reaching planing speed in 2.5 seconds and accelerating through 30 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds. Despite lacking traditional running gear such as props or rudders, the jet-drive system offers excellent handling, allowing the boat to maintain traction and execute tight turns without sliding or spinning out. Operators are advised to moderate speed during turns for passenger comfort. A 12-degree bow rise was noted during acceleration, but the design of the sheer line ensures unobstructed visibility whether seated or on the bolster.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

Yamaha has optimized the bow seating area with versatile cushion arrangements that allow customization of the seating layout. A hatch in the bow area can be opened and secured to block wind through the walk-through windshield, providing protection on cooler mornings. The port side features a spacious storage compartment that can double as a changing room or accommodate a portable toilet. The transom benefits from the low-profile jet drive engines, enabling a sleek patio-style rear deck with ample seating and the option to install a table, creating a pleasant social space. The low transom height facilitates easy gear loading and water access. Additionally, the self-draining cockpit is plumbed to drain directly overboard rather than into the bilge, enhancing convenience and maintenance.

Helm and Cockpit Layout

The helm station is designed for functionality and ease of use, featuring a clean layout with rocker switches and integrated circuit breakers for quick access. Instrumentation includes three gauges: a speedometer flanked by two smart tachometers capable of displaying multiple engine parameters. Engine controls are mounted at a 45-degree angle, which is comfortable when seated but can feel awkward when operating from the flip-up bolster, requiring some adjustment in hand positioning. However, this is mitigated by the inclusion of no-wake mode and cruise assist features, which allow for fine incremental speed adjustments via buttons without manipulating the throttles directly. The captain's seat is a wraparound design with swivel and fore-aft movement, complemented by a flip-up bolster for standing operation. On the port side, the companion seat converts easily from forward-facing to an aft-facing lounger, facilitating social interaction in the cockpit area that can comfortably accommodate up to seven people.

Engine Access and Maintenance

Access to the engine compartment is straightforward, with ample space for routine inspections and maintenance. The jet drives are easily reachable from the transom, allowing quick clearing of debris or clogs that may occur during operation. This design consideration enhances reliability and reduces downtime.

Conclusion

The Yamaha SX240 combines efficient twin jet propulsion with thoughtful design features that enhance both performance and onboard comfort. Its rapid acceleration, responsive handling, and fuel-efficient cruising options make it suitable for a variety of recreational boating activities. The versatile seating arrangements, protective windshields, and easy maintenance access reflect Yamaha's attention to detail in creating a well-rounded day boat. Overall, the SX240 presents a compelling option for boaters seeking a nimble, comfortable, and user-friendly vessel.
