Yamaha SX195: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Yamaha 195 Series introduces two models: the SX and the AR with a wakeboard tower, designed specifically for the more aggressive driver. This series emphasizes attention to detail and performance, combining innovative engineering with practical features to enhance the boating experience.
Exterior Design and Features
The exterior of the Yamaha 195 Series includes thoughtful design elements such as 4-inch pull-up cleats and dedicated anchor storage that preserves valuable space under the side seats. The cockpit layout is optimized with battery storage and a battery switch located under the port side seat cushion, keeping the area organized and accessible.
Engine and Mechanical Systems
At the heart of the 195 Series is the newly introduced 1812cc Yamaha 4-stroke, 4-cylinder supercharged and intercooled 16-valve Super Vortex High Output (SVHO) engine. This powerful engine, previously successful in WaveRunner competitions, is paired with a 160mm jet pump featuring a stainless steel three-bladed impeller. The engine compartment is designed for ease of maintenance and daily checks, with soundproofing that maintains a comfortable noise level during cruising. A notable innovation is the convenient clean-out port for the jet pump, allowing quick access to the impeller without requiring the operator to enter the water, enhancing safety and ease of maintenance.
Helm and Controls
The helm station is equipped with a clean, uncluttered dash featuring two gauges, including a selectable display that provides real-time data such as fuel consumption, miles per gallon, distance traveled since last fill, water depth, temperature, and battery voltage. The matte finish and visor reduce glare, improving visibility. The upgraded premium steering wheel complements the layout, while illuminated rocker switches flank both sides of the helm. A standout feature is the cruise assist and no-wake rocker switch, which allows the operator to set and adjust cruise speed incrementally, including maintaining no-wake speeds with minimal throttle input. The walk-through windshield is black anodized, offering a sleek contrast and distortion-free visibility.
Performance and Handling
Measuring 19 feet in length overall with an 8-foot beam and a shallow 13-inch draft, the Yamaha 195 Series weighs 2,238 pounds empty. During testing with full fuel and two passengers, the total weight was approximately 2,838 pounds. Powered by the SVHO engine and jet pump, the boat achieved a top speed of 52.3 mph at 7,500 rpm, with a cruising range of 69 miles at that speed. Economical cruising at 5,000 rpm yielded 24.4 mph and a fuel consumption of 6.7 gallons per hour, allowing for a range of 98 statute miles while retaining a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration to 30 mph occurred in under six seconds with minimal bow rise. Handling improvements include an articulating keel that provides zero-thrust steering, straight-line tracking during acceleration, and enhanced responsiveness in turns. The boat demonstrated smooth transitions over wakes with minimal hull slap and low spray, contributing to an engaging and comfortable ride.
Conclusion
The Yamaha 195 Series successfully combines aggressive styling, powerful performance, and refined handling into a compact and well-thought-out package. Its innovative features, such as the SVHO engine integration, articulating keel, and user-friendly controls, make it a compelling choice for drivers seeking an exciting and practical boating experience.
