Highlights:

  • Hull and deck design that’s long, stable and comfortable.
  • Maximized comfort for driver and passengers.
  • “Theater” seating for Cruiser® models.
  • Mechanical neutral for starting in place.
  • “Command link” instrumentation buttons on dash.
  • Fast access stern storage area for wet items and tow ropes.
  • Large stern reboarding area.

Led by the flagship FX Cruiser SHO®, the industry’s best-selling luxury-performance model ever, the 2013 FX® Series delivers the utmost comfort, convenience, storage capacity, towing ability, and unadulterated fun.

The FX® models offer the longest, most comfortable seats today when riding with multiple passengers without any compromises to performance and handling when riding solo.

Adding to the comfort of the premium two-piece seat is an additional bolster support to provide more comfort for the second passenger. Watertight storage is available under the rear section of the seat. Combined with the watertight helm storage, FX models feature two watertight storage areas.

But that is only the beginning. The FX® Series features a number of industry leading innovations that include an easy to use mechanical neutral, command link instrumentation buttons on the dash, and a fast access wet storage compartment located at the stern of the craft.  These features are exclusive to Yamaha and the FX® Series.

NanoXcel® Hulls and Decks

The styling of the FX® Series is a combination of symmetry, balance and sleek flow made possible by Yamaha’s exclusive closed molded process.

This process creates smooth, exact parts every time. There are no ribs or structural inconsistencies that show through the finished product.

All FX models feature Yamaha’s exclusive NanoXcel hull, deck, and liner material that significantly reduces overall weight, increases strength, and improves fuel economy.

In addition to the longer deck, the hull features a full keel for excellent straight-line tracking and comes with full-length outside chines for better stability in turns, particularly with multiple riders onboard.

At the stern of the craft is a large, deep reboarding step with multiple grab handles added. The FX® line sports the industry’s first and only stern wet storage compartment just below the tow eye. There is no need to unhook the towline when taking a break from towing and there is now a convenient place to store the line.

Unrivaled Driver Experience with Enhanced Cockpit Ergonomics

The 2013 FX® Series features a true neutral gear that is mechanical and enables the watercraft to be started in neutral to stay motionless in the water with the engine running. Integrated into the reverse handle, this system offers added control when docking and loading on a trailer.

The dash of the FX® Series includes multifunction instrumentation controls and mode buttons in easy-to-reach locations. Added to the cockpit is a spacious glove box for smaller items and watertight storage for cellphones, keys, and wallets, along with tilt steering and Yamaha’s exclusive Quick Shift Trim System, which can easily adjust the trim angle of the jet nozzle.

The Yamaha SHO and HO Marine Engine

The heart of the Yamaha FX® Series is the Yamaha 1.8L marine engine that is the largest displacement motor in the industry. The Yamaha SHO models feature the 1.8-liter Yamaha Super High Output marine engine with a supercharger and intercooler for increased performance.

The Yamaha HO models feature the Yamaha High Output version that is naturally-aspirated for added fuel economy.

Engine features include:

  • Cruise Assist™, Yamaha’s exclusive feature that reduces throttle fatigue, improves towing capability, and can extend the range of touring.
  • Yamaha’s No Wake Mode™, which sets the engine to optimum no wake speed, is especially convenient for marinas and long no wake zones.
  • Yamaha’s exclusive remote transmitter security system and Low RPM Mode™, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 26%.
  • Open loop cooling for best performance, reliability and low maintenance.
  • Throttle by wire reverse system controls RPM in reverse gear for maximum thrust efficiency.

All of the FX® Series models are optimized to operate using regular unleaded fuel.

FX SHO

The sport edition of the SHO models keeps the attention on performance. Delivers the same innovative features and advanced manufacturing as the Cruiser®, but with a more aggressive body style and graphics with added versatility for watersports towing.

  • Supercharged 1.8L Yamaha Super High Output marine engine.
  • Bench seating for added versatility.
  • Available in Deep Blue or Black.

Yamaha FX SHO: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Yamaha FX-SHO series personal watercraft features a length overall of 140.2 inches, a beam of 48.4 inches, and an overall height of 48.4 inches. The dry weight is 853 pounds for the Cruiser SHO and 851 pounds for the FX-SHO. Both models are built on the same platform with key differences in features and design. Powered by an 1812cc supercharged intercooled 4-stroke 4-cylinder marine engine, these watercraft are engineered to run efficiently on regular 87 octane unleaded gasoline. The fuel tank capacity is 18.5 US gallons, and the total storage capacity is 33.2 gallons.

Exterior Design and Features

Yamaha has redesigned the forward section of the FX-SHO series with a flatter, more aggressive profile, including a familiar bumper system and a low-profile rubber rail. The wing mirrors are positioned outward for enhanced usability and provide a good field of view aft. The hulls are constructed from Nano XL, a lightweight material formed through a closed mold process that ensures precise and consistent hull shapes. The redesigned sponsons measure 24 inches by approximately 5 inches and contribute to the watercraft's stability and sharp turning capabilities. The aft deck is full beam with a depth of 13 inches, featuring a large reboarding step with grab handles for easy access.

Console and Controls

The console on the FX Cruiser SHO model includes a large analog gauge centrally located to display RPM or speed, flanked by two multifunction digital displays that provide information such as fuel consumption, speed, and compass headings. The FX SHO model features a single multifunction display. Both models utilize an electronic key system that allows locking, unlocking, and a low mode to limit maximum RPMs for less experienced riders. The handlebars are ergonomically designed with adjustable positions to accommodate both standing and seated riding styles. Controls include throttle lever, no wake mode, cruise assist with incremental speed adjustment, engine cut-off lanyard, start/stop buttons, trim adjust for jet pump nozzle angle, and a redesigned reverse gate control with a release latch for smooth maneuvering.

Storage and Seating

The FX Cruiser SHO offers a three-tier stadium seating arrangement designed for comfort, while the FX SHO features a sportier seat aimed at more aggressive riding. Storage is ample, with a gasketed forward compartment that remains dry even when exposed to water, a dry storage area in the console for valuables, and a pull-out waterproof container located under the aft seat. Additional storage compartments are accessible beneath the seat, including easy access to the battery and engine flush system. The tow line connection is conveniently positioned under the seat, allowing the observer to sit comfortably facing aft with grab handles for safety.

Power and Performance

The FX-SHO series is powered by a purpose-built 1812cc supercharged intercooled 4-stroke 4-cylinder engine paired with a jet pump featuring a three-blade stainless steel impeller with a 17.5-degree pitch. Performance testing recorded a top speed of 66.7 miles per hour at 7,500 RPM, with a fuel consumption rate of 19.2 gallons per hour, yielding approximately 3.47 miles per gallon and a range of 58 statute miles. Typical cruising occurred at 4,500 RPM, averaging 30.1 miles per hour while consuming 5.1 gallons per hour, which translates to 5.96 miles per gallon and a range of 99 statute miles. Acceleration from zero to 30 miles per hour averaged 1.7 seconds. The reverse gate system demonstrated excellent maneuverability with distinct positions for reverse, neutral, and forward, allowing precise control during docking and low-speed maneuvers.

Conclusion

The Yamaha FX-SHO series combines advanced engineering, thoughtful design, and robust performance features to deliver a versatile and high-performing personal watercraft. With its refined hull construction, ergonomic controls, comfortable seating options, and efficient powertrain, the FX-SHO models cater to both recreational riders seeking comfort and enthusiasts looking for aggressive handling. The comprehensive storage solutions and user-friendly features such as electronic key operation and cruise assist further enhance the overall riding experience.
