Yamaha FX Cruiser HO: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Yamaha FX Cruiser HO is a luxury performance touring watercraft designed to offer both comfort and efficiency for extended rides. It incorporates advanced features aimed at reducing rider fatigue and enhancing the touring experience, making it a notable option in its category.
Ergonomics and Comfort Features
This model includes adjustable handlebars that can be tailored to fit drivers of various sizes, significantly reducing upper body fatigue during operation. The luxury seat is designed to provide comfort for both the driver and passengers, supporting longer excursions with ease.
Control and Riding Modes
The FX Cruiser HO is equipped with a cruise assist function, allowing riders to maintain a set RPM without constant throttle pressure. This system also enables incremental adjustments to speed. Additionally, a no wake mode maintains a low-speed RPM setting, ideal for navigating restricted areas without frequent throttle modulation.
Storage Capacity
For touring purposes, the watercraft offers substantial storage space, totaling 23.7 gallons combined. This capacity allows riders to carry necessary gear and supplies comfortably for longer journeys.
Construction and Hull Design
Yamaha utilizes proprietary nanotechnology in the construction of the FX Cruiser HO, applying a high-pressure compression process that bonds molecules to create a lightweight yet exceptionally strong hull. The hull features a flatter entry and a hard chine extending to the stern, complemented by dual lifting strakes that flatten toward the rear. These design elements improve stability and reduce friction by channeling air beneath the hull, contributing to enhanced top-end speed.
Engine and Performance
Powered by a naturally aspirated 1812 cc engine, one of Yamaha's largest for watercraft, the FX Cruiser HO is optimized to run on low lead fuel. Unlike supercharged models, it sacrifices some top-end speed in favor of improved fuel economy, aligning with its touring focus. Performance testing with one rider and half a tank of fuel recorded a top speed of 63.3 miles per hour at 7700 RPM. The average cruising speed was 44.6 miles per hour at 6000 RPM, consuming 7.2 gallons per hour, which translates to approximately 6.19 miles per gallon. With its full 18.5-gallon fuel capacity, the watercraft can cover an estimated 166 miles, including a 10% fuel reserve.
Dimensions and Weight
The FX Cruiser HO measures 132.7 inches in length overall, with a beam of 48.4 inches and a height of 48.8 inches. Its dry weight is 805 pounds, balancing size and maneuverability for touring purposes.
Conclusion
The Yamaha FX Cruiser HO combines luxury features, ergonomic design, and efficient performance tailored for touring enthusiasts. Its advanced construction techniques, comfortable seating, and thoughtful control systems make it a compelling choice for riders seeking a balance between comfort and capability on the water.
