Overview

The Yamaha WaveRunner EXR is a watercraft designed for budget-conscious buyers seeking enhanced performance. Incorporating features from Yamaha's higher-performance race models, the EXR aims to deliver a balance of agility, speed, and handling. This model is powered by Yamaha's TR-1 engine, a 3-cylinder, 4-stroke powerplant with a displacement of 1049cc, providing a solid foundation for spirited riding.

Power and Performance

The EXR features a top-loading intake grate that forces more water into a high-pressure 144mm pump, with an extended nozzle introduced in this model year to improve both performance and handling. The craft is equipped with a 3-blade stainless steel impeller, contributing to its responsive acceleration and top-end speed. Yamaha's Nano XL2 technology reduces the overall weight of the EXR by 60 pounds, enhancing agility and stability. During testing, the watercraft achieved a top speed of 54 miles per hour at 7350 RPM. Optimal cruising speed was recorded at 32 miles per hour at 5000 RPM, with a fuel consumption of 3.5 gallons per hour, equating to approximately 9.3 miles per gallon and a range of 110 statute miles when accounting for a 10% fuel reserve from the 13.2-gallon capacity. The EXR also includes Yamaha's Ride slow speed control system, allowing riders to slow the craft, engage neutral, or reverse, thereby improving maneuverability in tight or slow-speed situations.

Exterior Design and Controls

Measuring 123.6 inches in length with a 44.5-inch beam, and an empty weight of 540 pounds, the EXR is rated to carry up to three passengers, though the seat is more comfortably suited for two riders. The craft features rearview mirrors positioned well within the dock strike zone for enhanced safety. Controls are intuitively arranged on the handlebars: the left handlebar houses the ride system trigger for slow speed control, including neutral and reverse functions, as well as a stop button and an emergency shutoff lanyard attachment point. A multi-function digital gauge centrally located below the handlebars displays fuel level, gear position, engine hours, battery voltage, and speed. The boarding platform and foot trays are surfaced with textured rubber for improved traction, and a small reboarding step is integrated beneath the right side of the platform. A wraparound grab handle is positioned under the seat at the rear, which also includes a ski tow line.

Storage and Additional Features

Storage options on the EXR include a rear compartment accessible by removing the seat, which houses a fire extinguisher and a removable tub that provides access to the engine. An automatic bilge pump is installed in the engine compartment's bottom. Additional storage is available in a glove box located ahead of the seat and in a watertight compartment in the bow. The fuel fill is conveniently located forward on the port side. Optional wireless Bluetooth speakers can be added for enhanced onboard entertainment.
