Yamaha AR190: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Yamaha AR190, part of the 190 Series, is designed as an affordable and family-friendly jet boat that offers a comprehensive set of features. With a length overall of 19 feet, a beam of 8 feet, and a draft of 12 feet 8 inches, this model balances accessibility with functionality. Its high freeboard—36 inches at the stern and 33 inches at the bow—contributes to both safety and interior space.
Exterior Design and Storage
The AR190 features thoughtful storage solutions throughout the boat. Underneath the bow seats, there is ample storage on both sides, complemented by dedicated anchor storage with anchor keepers at the forward section. The cockpit is designed with safety in mind, boasting deep storage compartments measuring 17 inches on both sides and additional storage within the cockpit deck itself, which is 16 inches deep and extends 45 inches from front to rear. The deck surface includes snap-in carpet that can be removed to reveal a non-skid surface beneath. Additional storage is available inside the console and in a glove box on top, which also serves as a secure, self-draining location for the stereo system.
Seating and Comfort
Seating capacity is well planned, accommodating two passengers in the bow and five in the wraparound cockpit seating, plus one at the helm, for a total of eight occupants. The bow seating easily converts into a sun pad with a standard filler cushion, ideal for relaxing while anchored or cruising. The integrated stern swim platform provides additional seating options. Despite its affordability, the boat maintains a high level of quality, with a two-tone color scheme, multiple fabric choices, and bead welding that enhance durability and aesthetics.
Power and Maintenance
Powering the AR190 is a Yamaha marine-specific 1812cc, 1.8-liter high-output engine, accessible beneath the aft seat. The engine compartment is spacious, allowing easy access to the oil filter and oil fill points. Maintenance is simplified with an external freshwater fill and a clean-out port located inside the aft wet storage compartment. A safety cut-off switch automatically disables the engine when the hatch is open, enhancing operational safety.
Helm and Controls
The helm features a straightforward panel with two primary gauges for speed and RPM, accompanied by waterproof, illuminated switches. Notably, the boat includes advanced features such as no-wake mode and cruise assist, uncommon in this price range. The helm seat offers adjustability with swivel and slide functions, and the steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base with a standard flip-up bolster for added comfort. Overhead, a forward-swept, collapsible tower and standard bimini provide protection and convenience, allowing the boat to fit into most garages and smaller marina racks.
Performance and Handling
On the water, the AR190 demonstrates quick acceleration and immediate planing. Its articulating keel enhances maneuverability at both low and high speeds, making turns predictable and controlled. While the boat exhibits typical jet boat characteristics such as spinning out at full throttle during sharp turns, it maintains solid handling overall. Steering requires only a three-quarter turn lock-to-lock, making it effortless and enjoyable to maneuver. The boat handles wakes confidently with no spray intrusion and exhibits a slight pull on the wheel below 24 miles per hour, which centers at higher speeds due to the keel design. Docking is straightforward and improved compared to previous models, thanks to the articulating keel.
Additional Features and Package
Yamaha offers the AR190 as a complete package that includes a trailer, enhancing its value proposition. The only aftermarket additions on the tested model were a mirror and board racks. This comprehensive offering, combined with its thoughtful design and performance, makes the AR190 a compelling option for those seeking an affordable, versatile jet boat.
Conclusion
The Yamaha AR190 successfully combines affordability, family-friendly features, and quality craftsmanship. Its well-designed storage, comfortable seating, reliable powerplant, and responsive handling make it a practical choice for recreational boating. The inclusion of advanced helm features and a collapsible tower further distinguishes it in its class. Overall, the AR190 delivers a solid performance and user experience that aligns well with its intended market.
