Returning as the best selling model in its class in 2010 is the Yamaha 242 Series that takes Yamaha Boats to its highest level of sophistication and refinement. Featuring the largest boat platform ever offered by Yamaha, the 24-foot, 11-person, 242 Series was designed from direct customer feedback to include their "wish list" of new features and technology as well as new signature design elements from Yamaha.
Exclusive to Yamaha 24-foot boats is the industry's first "rumble seat" design, a fun and innovative seating option that allows riders in the bow to enjoy a unique, front-facing point-of-view in the forward-most part of the bow when underway. Completing the bow is premium marine-grade upholstery, stainless-steel handrails, 4 stainless steel cupholders, multifunction filler cushion, a bow ladder, and an anchor locker.
Highlights:
- The flagships of the Yamaha boat line offering the highest level of refinement Yamaha offers.
- Twin 1.8L Yamaha marine engines.
- Expansive bow seating that features first ever "rumble" seat design.
- Latest version of Yamaha's award-winning stern lounge and swim platform design.
- GPS instrumentation, Cruise Assist and 3-speed No Wake Mode.
- Now rated with an 11-person capacity.
The cockpit of the 242 Series is roomy, lavish, and refined. The helm layout is minimalist and sophisticated with large analog gauges and integrated digital information displays that provide independently controlled access to a wide range of new information.
Utilizing an integrated GPS-based information control center, the digital displays can provide latitude, longitude, compass heading, elevation, water depth, trip odometer, clock, engine hours, engine speed, vessel voltage, vessel speed, highest speed, fuel level, fuel used and they are the first in their class to provide real time (gallons per hour and miles per gallon) fuel flow data.
Also at the helm is Yamaha's exclusive Cruise Assist and No Wake Mode. The Cruise Assist feature can be engaged at planing speeds. When engaged, Cruise Assist will hold the engines at a specific RPM for effortless cruising or towing and can be increased eight positions up and eight positions down at pre-set increments (125 - 188 rpm depending on current engine speed). The No Wake Mode includes three different RPM settings allowing the driver to easily increase or decrease their no wake speed to find the optimum setting.
Completing the helm is a premium stereo system with direct plug-in iPod® connectivity inside the unit. When the iPod® is plugged into the stereo, it will charge automatically and can be controlled entirely through the stereo controls, as well as the remote control on the swim platform. In addition, the new premium stereo comes with a separate waterproof and floatable handheld remote that can control the entire system from up to 50 feet away. The 242 Series also features a total of six waterproof speakers including two on the swim platform offering more sound in more places than Yamaha has ever offered before.
Also included in the cockpit are a fully enclosed, carpeted head compartment, multiple storage areas for gear, a dinette table with side-mount, and a large removable cooler that stores under the passenger seat. NOTE: The cockpit seating in the 242 Limited includes a Captain's Chair for the first mate.
The two-tier stern lounge area and swim platform of the 240 Series is wide, comfortable, and low to the water, which makes reboarding even easier and hanging out at the stern with family and friends more fun.
Exclusive to the 242 Series are plush, padded backrests and seating pads on the stern lounge area. Completing the stern area is a dinette table with side-mount, a rear stereo remote, hydro-turf® deck mats, an integrated freshwater shower, stainless steel cupholders, and a reboarding ladder that extends deep into the water for effortless reboarding.
Under the waterline is Yamaha's dual internal drive propulsion system that delivers better performance and more peace of mind than traditional stern drive models.
Yamaha's ultra-responsive internal drive system brings the 242 Series on plane faster and accelerates quicker than comparable boats. The 242's shallow draft and enclosed impellers increase the boat's versatility, allowing you to travel to places not accessible to stern drive boats. Yamaha Boats also feature pump clean out ports that are easily accessible from the swim platform, allowing boat owners to effortlessly clean out any debris without getting in the water or having to reach under the boat. Additionally, the low maintenance of Yamaha Boats makes them always ready to launch, all season long.

Yamaha 242 Limited: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Yamaha 242 Limited S is Yamaha's flagship jet boat, designed to combine family-friendly water sports capabilities with high performance. At 24 feet in length and weighing 3,700 pounds, this vessel features a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a draft of 17 and a quarter inches. It is powered by twin 1.8-liter, fuel-injected, four-stroke, four-cylinder marine-specific Yamaha engines, delivering a balance of power and efficiency. With a fuel capacity of 50 gallons, the 242 Limited S is engineered for both spirited performance and practical use.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
The boat's exterior and deck areas emphasize comfort and functionality. The bow offers some of the best seating for cruising, featuring a pair of dedicated lounges on each side with plush upholstery and unobstructed views. A storable air dam helps retain warmth during cooler morning outings. The portside companion seat is ergonomically designed with flip-up armrests and reclining capability, ideal for observing towline activities or swiveling to join the U-shaped cockpit seating area. The captain's chair mirrors these comforts and includes a flip-up bolster pad for enhanced visibility when standing. The aft cockpit accommodates five adults comfortably and benefits from a built-in bimini top for shade. A removable centerline cushion facilitates easy access to the transom walkthrough, a thoughtful design element given the high traffic in this area. The transom lounge is notably practical, featuring aft-facing seats and a deep swim platform covered in soft, non-skid C-deck material, complemented by mini seatback cushions on the swim platform for added comfort during water activities.
Storage and Practical Features
Yamaha has prioritized storage throughout the 242 Limited S. The bow houses large lockers beneath the seats for dry storage, as well as a sizable hatch concealing recessed anchor storage and a beach boarding ladder that can be deployed without disturbing the anchor. Cockpit storage includes a dedicated beverage cooler on the starboard side and easy access to batteries and switches on the port side, facilitated by hinged seat cushions for convenience. A bracket for a side-mount table enhances the entertaining options. The companion-side console contains a versatile compartment suitable for large gear storage, a changing station, or a dayhead, with cleverly designed drink holders on its exterior. Additional storage is found at the stern with large wet lockers on both sides, ideal for fenders, lines, or deflated towables. A 12-volt courtesy outlet is conveniently located over to port, and under the seat bottoms, there is access to jet pump cleanouts and the freshwater fill connector.
Helm and Control Systems
The helm is equipped with Yamaha's fully integrated command center known as K'NEX. This intuitive touchscreen panel consolidates control of all boat accessories and provides comprehensive information on engine status, tank levels, and temperature. It also manages the radio, lighting, and other boat functions from a single interface. The K'NEX system offers versatile control methods, allowing operation via touchscreen icons, physical buttons on the screen, joystick controller buttons, or by using the joystick as a mouse, enhancing ease of use and captain engagement.
Power and Performance
The Yamaha 242 Limited S is powered by twin 1.8-liter, fuel-injected, four-stroke, four-cylinder engines specifically designed for marine use. Routine maintenance is straightforward, with simple daily checks for oil and coolant and excellent engine access. A standout innovation is Yamaha's articulating keel system, which integrates a shallow keel running the boat's length to improve stability and tracking, paired with an articulating paddle guided by the steering nozzle. This system significantly enhances turning control and off-power maneuverability. Performance testing with two people aboard showed a time to plane of 2.3 seconds and acceleration from zero to 30 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds. The boat reached a top speed of 51.8 miles per hour at 7,500 rpm, consuming 23 gallons per hour at wide-open throttle. The optimal cruising speed was recorded at 27.8 miles per hour at 5,500 rpm, with a fuel burn of 9.4 gallons per hour. Yamaha's Quiet Cruise program effectively reduces noise levels, with measured sound levels of 54 dBA at idle, 87 dBA at wide-open throttle, and 76 dBA at best cruise speed.
Conclusion
The Yamaha 242 Limited S is a well-rounded jet boat that excels in both performance and family-oriented features. Its thoughtful design, high-quality materials, and innovative engineering such as the articulating keel system make it a standout in its class. The boat offers comfortable seating arrangements, ample storage, and advanced helm controls, making it suitable for a variety of water activities and cruising scenarios. Overall, it represents a compelling option for those seeking a versatile and high-performing jet boat.
